The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Obviously a lot of attention this week will be on this rivalry, with Cotto-Margarito seen as the newest chapter.
Everyone knows about Gomez-Pintor, Sanchez-Gomez, Tito-Vargas (Mexican-American), and Chavez-Rosario, etc.
Let's try to list other great Mexico vs. PR fights that are overlooked, favorite moments from the rivalry, etc.
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Don't forget Camacho vs. Chavez. But the best one out of all of them had to be Pintor-Gomez. You can watch most of it on youtube. The 12th round was truly special.
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Gomez - Zerrate
Trinidad - Campas
Was Cazares Mexican?? if so Calderon - Cazares
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico

Two of my favorites. Also, Benitez-Palomino is way up there. And yes... Cazares is Mexican.

That was an action-packed 4 round fight! The only time I ever thought Tito was hurt by a knockdown shot (other than Hopkins). That was a devastating KO punch!! One of the craziest ever! Wow!

Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Rivalry is an understatement. It goes far beyond the ring. My father is 100% mexican and my mother is 100% P.R. of course they weren't married long. Everyone asks me how the hell they ever fell in love. Both sides bad mouth the other race and all I can do is sit back and laugh. Outside of the gym we battle over who has the more beautiful woman, better food, and breath taking land. Either way I am very proud to be 50% 50%, we produce the best fighters (champs) of any other country in the world. Hard to root for any fighter when the two races square off. I love my people and the heart we show in and out the ring.

Damn bro... I can see where the nickname comes from. Some family friends have the same situation... father Mexican, mother Puerto Rican. In my own case, my youngest brother's wife is Mexican. She's not that much into boxing, but she's keenly aware of the huge rivalry. There's a lot of nationalistic pride in both countries.

Your half Mexican and half Puerto Rican. Yet you live in Youngstown? How the fukk you manage that?
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
I was lucky enough that both sides of my family are huge fans of the sport. If baseball wasn't on the tv boxing was growing up. Southside gym [Jack Loew's place] is walking distance from the house so I got a taste of boxing early.
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Easy to manage the magority of Youngstown is hispanic and black.

You got any signed Pavlik stuff ?
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Ha I don't look at Kelly like that. I'm 28, we grew up 2 streets from each other, played tee ball, started down southside gym around the same time. He just married good friends of the family. He just a regular guy we forget he's a celebrity. He goes to the same bars and places he did before he was champ. Great kid who hasn't let the fame change him. So if i seem to always defend Kelly thats why.
Re: The Rivalry: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico
Don't forget Oscar De La Hoya is half mexican. He fought and was robbed off Trinidad IMO.
