Did Cotto's nose affect him?
I am wondering if anyone else thinks that Cotto's nose being seemingly broken had an effect on his stamina late. I mean he won the first 6 rounds pretty clearly, and he was punching off the ropes with didn't allow Margarito to throw very much, but as that nose got worse Cotto didn't seem to be able to breath properly or at least his punch output would indicate that. I wouldn't say this would be a factor, but it definitely played a role in the Vazquez-Marquez fight, and I can't help but feeling Cotto was the rising tide in the 9th round and most of the 10th, but his stamina seemed to fail him.
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
At the end of the fight, Cotto looked like one of his opponents...LOL...... I believe he had a broke jaw too.
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
I don't think so, he's a great fighter just like some of those who fall just short of truly elite he has a suspect chin.
Very similar to Rafael Marquez. Put him in with a relentless punching machine who doesn't stop coming forward and he was always going to have problems.
I thought he'd get KO'd he's been rocked in many fights and didn't look totally comfortable against Zab and Mosely.
He's a great fighter no doubt but the Margarito, Duran type battlers don't suit him.
I still think he'd be a tougher fight for Floyd than Tony though, I see Floyd doing to Tony what Cotto did for the first 5 rounds but keeping it up for 12.
Floyd is truly world elite and is one of the all time greats who like Ali, Robinson and Ray Leonard doesn't fold under intense pressure and would be durable enough to see of Margarito.
His lack of real power though would mean he'd have a harder job with Cotto imo.
Bit like the Ali, Foreman, Frazier thing.
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
I still think Cotto didn't seem terribly hurt by one punch of Margarito's... He seemed to get progressively drained more than wobbling around like he was against Corley or Torres. He didn't go to the body at all which surprised me a bit, I personally think he should have stayed in the middle of the round a little more and just throw punches because he was so much sharper than Margarito he wasn't being hit, and he was just smashing Margarito with punches. I think off the ropes he doesn't get the same leverage, he doesn't show Margarito he's there to fight, and he can't step back when a barrage does come.

I agree completely..Cotto is 10x harder for Floyd than Marg would be imo. Which is why I fully expect Floyd to come out of the woodwork in the next few months after this result.

I think the nose did play a role. Bloody mouth, bloody nose, both affected Cotto's breathing and Margarito didn't give him a chance to stop moving. That's why Cotto had to submit to Margarito. Exhaustion. Swallowing blood and inhibited breathing doesn't help any.
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
Cotto is tougher for Floyd. Unlike Cotto, Floyd can stay away from Tony and potshot him for 12 rounds. Cotto looked great in the early part. He just couldn't protect the body and it wore him down eventually.
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
I think the nose must have played a part. It was a mess and he lost a lot of blood. Margarito just kept making it flow again everytime it seemed to have stopped.
It was tough watching that because going into the 11th I think Cotto was winning comfortably on points (just my impression on seeing it live) but Margarito seemed to be throwing more and more and getting Cotto on those ropes. Any other fighter would have been taken out by Cotto, but Margarito was barely bruised come the end. Amazingly tough skin! An animal stalking down its prey until the final kill. Brutal. I was hoping Cotto could cling on and just try and fight safe until the bell. Not so easy with Margarito so unrelenting. And so the end it was.
Stunning fight...really did all it said it would.

GOOD POST Teath , well , i agree with you , is good to analyse what really happened on that fight , and to me if asked if Cottos nose affected him , i have to say yes , cause you cant breath naturally bleeding all the fight can rest you power and Stamina , i loved how Cotto works his first 6 rounds , but i knew what would going happen more late , although you got a good point too Teath , i saw too that Cotto didn't threw his best body punches , i thought that he would going work with that , but he didn't .............................
Well Margaro won and Congratulation , i hope to see the Rematch .......;D
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
Yes...in the fight when cotto realizes that his nose was bleeding it seemed that it bothers him for the rest of the fight...and also adds to his stamina problem...made it harder to breathe

Yo Taeth, what's up, are you not giving Maragarito credit becuase you (and many others)thought Cotto would win, some even said by KO?
I won £80.00 when Barrera beat Naz, and today I won £210.00 as I bet that Maragarito would win by TKO R 11.
Cotto, I still give you nuff respect because no one else had the balls to fight Margarito, and you two (Cotto and Margarito) are the best Welters in the world!
Floyd, we don't need you, this fight was Wicked1
REMATCH!!!
Re: Did Cotto's nose affect him?
I thought Cotto would win, but Margarito won how I thought he would if he was going to win, by wearing Cotto down. However, Margarito's punches didn't hurt Cotto half as much as I thought they were going to, and his(Margarito) boxing skills weren't half as good as I thought. I give him props for beating a hell of a fighter in Cotto, but this was simply due to the matchup, not Margarito being the better fighter. Sometimes people have other people's numbers.

The punches that have KOed other opponents didn't have the same effect on Tony who kept walking forward like a tank. Like I have said before, Cotto is prone to getting cut and his jaw/chin has been exposed in almost all his fights. We saw that once again.
