Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
What would have happened if that version of Whitaker had foughten the Meldrick Taylor that fought Chavez. That would have been one of the craziest fights ever. Meldrick was on a different level in terms of speed, I would say they have similar power, but Whitaker was quite a bit hard to hit, but then again Taylor had amazing combinations. God, I hope they have computer programs that will be able to emulate fights in my lifetime, because this fight along with Armstrong-Pep, Robinson-Leonard, Ali-Lewis are among the fights i would love to see.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
I think they would of fought if they had not been best friends.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
Same Olympic team, same time frame, they never fought because Taylor was one of the rare people that could put up with Whittaker and Taylor was also one of the rare people that Whittaker was nice too LoL
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
Being in the same camp they must have sparred a lot.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
At the time ,Sweet pea was one of my least favorites,But I think he would win over 12 vs. Taylor.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
The ring magazine did this match up at the time they were both contenders , the experts picked SWEATPEA via the points route and i agree , Taylor was a top fighter but Pernel is one of the best fighters of all time in my opinion.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
I don't think Pernell Whitaker's defense would be as effective as it normally would be because Meldrick Taylor throws his combinations so fast he would for certain hit Pernell Whitaker more than Pernell Whitaker was ever hit in his prime.......
But i do think Pernell Whitaker was the smarter fighter and had the better boxing brain as it has been stated before Meldrick Taylor couldn't fight a smart fight for the full 12 rounds and would often neglect his boxing skills and swing for the fences......
A bit like Shane Mosley in many ways but i think Pernell Whitaker wins a close 12 round decision based on being the better all round fighter and having the better boxing brain.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
I think Melrick was a superior boxer to SHane MOsley. Mosely is a great athlete, he has great durability, but he always lookd robotic to me, and he couldn't make that transition for offensive to defense or vice virsa very smoothly.
As for Whitaker-Taylor... I felt Taylor was beating Chavez a lot more so than WHitaker was. He beat Chavez every single round, and I felt he looked a lot more impressive against Chavez, except the fact he got knocked out.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
I would have loved to see Mayweather vs Whitaker. Two guys who are known for defense and being slick. I would give Mayweather the edge just because he seems to have more power to his punches. I can see Mayweather scoring a flash KO in some rounds just like Trinidad did when he faced Whitaker.
Mayweather UD.

I don't think Meldrick Taylor was beating Julio Cesar Chavez better than Pernell Whitaker was i think Julio Cesar Chavez won more rounds than he got credit for........
And gave Meldrick Taylor a bad physical beating even though he was losing the rounds he was doing far more damage.......
Meldrick Taylor may have won more rounds than Pernell Whitaker did against Julio Cear Chavez depending on how you scored it but i thought Meldrick Taylor fought a silly tactical fight when he could have easily outboxed Julio Cesar Chavez......
And that goes back to what i said earlier with Pernell Whitaker having better boxing brain that Meldrick Taylor and didn't let his pride take over unlike Meldrick Taylor did many times.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
JCC was more in his prime when he fought Taylor and his damaging punches should have counted for more points than they did. Prime JCC would have won that fight against Whitaker with the same judges and Don King promoting the fight. ;)
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
Bullshit Meldrick Taylor deserved every single round in that fight, watch it again. Once again you can't use hindsight to judge a fight its not fair. Meldrick was landing way too many punches, using way better ring generalship defense, landing the cleaner blows. There was no way of knowing what would happen in the 12th round if you saw that fight for the first time. Meldrick dominated JCC for those 11 rounds as much as anyone has dominated anyone in the sport.

Meldrick boxed a lot more then he was given credit for. I hate this RJJ and Mayweather get credit taken away because they box safely, while guys like Taylor who do what people ask, he boxes, but he doesn't run away he is considered to have used the wrong strategy. Meldrick used great movement in that fight, his defense was great in that fight, but Chavez hits anyone he fights, he hit Whitaker a lot of times, he hit everyone.

I don't know if your implying me but i have never took any credit away from Floyd Mayweather or Roy Jones when they have fought defensively.....
As for Meldrick Taylor you can't honestly say he used to right tactic against Julio Cesar Chavez.....
He stood toe to toe far too much when he could have just kept circling the ring and landing combinations and using his jab im sure if you asked Meldrick Taylor im sure he would say if he could go back in time he would of just used an in out tactic and boxed for 12 rounds.......
Im not saying all his tactics were bad against Julio Cesar Chavez he done somethings very well like stopping Julio Cesar Chavez's workrate with his own superb workrate and combinations and using good movement and if he wouldn't of stood toe to toe too much and if he wouldn't of let his machoism take over he would of clearly won 12 round decision without taking half as much punishment he did.......
But his corner didn't help either and i think they cost him the fight when they told him he had to win the 12th round......
As for Julio Cesar Chavez hitting Pernell Whitaker alot ? i have to disagree i think Julio Cesar Chavez did land some good shots in the first 5 rounds but after that it was all Pernell Whitaker and he made Julio Cesar Chavez look foolish by making him miss and even hurting Julio Cesar Chavez a few times on the inside......
Except for the occasional right hands i don't think Julio Cesar Chavez hit Pernell Whitaker that much.
Re: Just watched Whitaker-Chavez and got to thinking
Taylor didn't get hit all that much either, he was hit a few times each round, but he was only standing toe to toe when he throwing his punches, and he had good defense in close. I think he got caught most in a similar situation as Gamboa, when he was moving back out he wasn't keeping his hands up, as for the Whitaker fight, I haven't seen prime Whitaker get hit that much from anybody that I can remember, he wasn't getting hit by 300 punches, but Chavez was landing throughout the fight, just not like Whitaker was. Whitaker definitely dominated the second half of that fight, but Taylor dominated their whole fight, and within what Taylor could do he fought as well as he could. Some fast guys just can't fight with distance. Gamboa, Mosley come to mind, Molina, etc. It takes much more than just speed to be able to move away from an opponent, stop on a time and counter effectively thats why there have only been a handful of guys that could do it.
As for Roy Jones Jr, and Mayweather I wasn't talking about you SSSS, just some morons on this site.
