http://boxeomundial.net/news_images/...y_Pacquiao.jpgPacquiao here in México is an icon. Despite he has beaten a large list of mexican fighters. i´ve gone to cover many fights here in mexico (all over the country) and its amazing to see how the ring is the dirt floor, no ropes, no real referi, just two guys beating each other without boxing trunks, without boxing shoes, just their daily outfit. Wether its boots and pants. But they want to be Pacquiao. You would hear the introducctions as Juan Antonio ``El Pacquiao`` Martinez. Or in other venues the crowd would scream to the fighter who is agressive ``lets go Pacquiao`` this gives you an idea of how big Pacquiao is here in Mexico.
For his fight against David Diaz, Paquiao was a big, or i should said a huge favorite to win. I conducted a poll in the street here in mexico and 90 % of the people wanted Pacman to win. They didnt know who Diaz was in the first place. Pacquiao brings that plus that Mike Tyson used to bring to his fights and that is exciment, he comes to fight and that is what people all over the World like, México is no exception
The other fighter that is as popular as Manny here in Mexico is Jorge ``Travieso`` Arce, obviously De La Hoya, and Julio Cesar Chavez jr.
You would mention the names of many other mexican fighters here in Mexico, such as Terra Garcia, Cochulito Montiel, Edgar Sosa, Christian Mijares, etc. And they are known to the hardcore boeing fans, but sadly the general public doesn´t know who they are, but they know who Manny Pacquiao is, its like asking who Bruce Lee was and everybody knows that. When you reach that level, its when you know you´re a superstar World wide and that is the result of one thing. Dedication and hard work.
De La Hoya vs Pacquiao: its a mismatch, everyone says that. i believe that to a certain point, but i also believe that Roach is right about oscar not pulling the trigger anymore. Look at his bout with Floyd jr. There were moments where Oscar would just stand in front of Floyd without punching, but recieving punches from all angles. When that happens and you stay in front of an oponent like that its not only that you are tired is that you cant pull the trigger. i think oscar is very strong for the first few rounds, but pacquiao its very strong for 12 rounds. And lets not forget that Steve Forbes can´t punch and is a small fighter and if he was able to do some damage to oscar, pacquiao should and will cause a lot of damage, speed is power and speed kills and pacquiao has that and a punch, he should take the fight get that huge payday and move on and probably begin to search for a few more fights and then retire.
The people in Mexico are still a bit angry with Oscar because he beat Julio Cesar Chavez twice.
I wouldn´t be surprise if Manny is the favorite here in Mexico over De La Hoya

This is the best article I've read about Pacquiao. Thanks to the author. Just proves Manny Pacquiao is a hero for EVERYBODY.
Funny thing is when my wife and I had our wedding anniversary vacation in Cancun 3 weeks ago, almost everyone that I've spoken to has always brought up Manny saying great things about him:)
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
....and someone asked who's fight against oscar would make more cash...pac or tony ;D
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
Wow... Im not trying to be disrespectful but that article is full of shat. 90 percent of mexicans wanted Pacquaio to win agaisnt Diaz? Pacquaio is proably more popular then Oscar because they are mad he beat Chavez twice?.......... Ok mexicans for a fact know who Pacquaio is because he fought Morales beat him twice, Same with barrera, and they say he robbed Marquez twice. I would say 90 percent of mexicans hate pacquiao and want him to lose as they are very aware of his "mexicutioner" alias. Sure they don't know who Diaz is but the last name alone would make them root for him. Trust me when I say they dislike him I go to mexico alot, I live in a hispanic community Brownsville I can walk to mexico if I wanted to... Thats not to say mexicans think pac is a bum because they do admit he is a great fighter but it's just hard to root for a guy who is label a mexican killer...
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
I read the article and found it interesting that in a hispanic website, that about 75% of the people that reviewed this were anonymous yet stated they were Pinoys.
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
For me, Pac lost his "Mexicutioner" status after facing Marquez twice.

plus his loss to a washed up Morales
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
The thing about all this is I actually like Pacquiao, I think he's an amazing fighter. It's his fan base that disgusts me. Who gave Pacquiao the Mexicutioner title? His fans, Who says Pacquiao can beat Ivan Drago at catchweight? His fans. Just calm down on all this stuff, please.
You are not getting paid as his agents so why act as if you are?
We have no say over his negotiations so why start 50 threads about it when 1 will do?
Why are you trying to be the voice of the hispanic community when you are not hispanic?
Why are you taking the words of one hispanic and stating that is the opinion of an entire nation?
You guys are ruining the Pacquiao experience for me, there are plenty of Pacquiao fan boards all over the web, go hang out there with all the yes men.

That article is very credible. In my experience. almost 95% of Mex-American I asked about this fight picks Pac. here's some of them:

Re: The Mexican Point Of View
Yikes, I thought this thread was to become positive like the article. A Filipino athlete transcending racial ambiguity and bias by getting respect from another nationality.
I did not post this to brag about PACQUIAO being GODZILLA.
Anyways. SALUD:)
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
Not every Manny Pacquiao fan thinks he is capable of walking on water, most of us are realistic and logical in our hopes for our Hero. We know his limitations and still stand behind him.
In all honesty though I'm starting to feel the animosity just because I'm rooting for him.
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
I am half-Mexican myself, which means 95% of my family is Mexican.
My family does not share that point of view.
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
If Mexican prospects boxers starting to adopt the alias "El Pacquiao" then it says a lot of PAC's popularity in Mexico's boxing community...

That doesn't even make sense.
Re: The Mexican Point Of View
PACQUIAO's response to this article by a Mexican boxing writer in a Mexican boxing website:
"If the article is the true pulse of boxing in the streets of Mexico, I would like to thank the Mexican people for their warmth and support. As a fighter, I have beaten Mexicans through most of my career but I would like to point out that there is nothing personal with any of my previous opponents — Marco Antonio "Baby Faced Assasin" Barrera, Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez, Erik "El Terrible" Morales, Oscar "Chololo" Larios, Hector Velazquez, Jorge Solis among many others. It is just my job to fight and fight well. It is just that the best fighters in my division happen to be Mexicans and I just happen to be lucky to win everytime. It is probably because I fight like a Mexican—brave gallant, courageous, never running away — that's why Mexicans love me.
Thank you to all the boxing fans around the world. Viva Mexico, too.
With the popularity that I am enjoying even in all of the streets of Mexico, I promise my fans that I will continue to fight like the true Mexican warriors — Chavez, Lopez, even Dela Hoya. Yes, I would still want to fight Dela Hoya in his last fight if our promoters get the right and justifiable deals for both of us. I hope the deal goes well.
God Bless Us All."
