I'm confused as to why the HBO PPV Casamayor Marquez event didn't feature the HBO team?
I assumed the stream I watched live was an independent broadcast but now I've downloaded the proper HBO files I still see two unrecognisable commentators, no Lampley, Kellerman, Lewis or Merchant and not even the HBO logo?
What happened? I'm confused?:confused:
That was a Golden Boy production. That's why we got "treated" to Mario Lopez as a host too.

Borges is one of the most veteran boxing reporters in the U.S. and Tompkins was one of Lampley's predecessors on HBO; he was even in Rocky IV. Wikipedia is your friend...Quote:

I also thought it was the "link team" and did not realize HBO had them as the main crew.That was the first time I had ever viewed an entire Card via the web :bucktooth:. Honestly,I did not miss Lampley's big blow hard drama call.......Tompkins is pretty good,was a decade plus Main Caller with Al bernstein on ESPN. He does get a little goofy at times but Mario Lopez ?? He's a hoser.
They're doing it to save money. There was a Thomas Hauser column a few weeks ago on secondsout.com covering what's going on at HBO/Showtime. Worth reading. He always is.
I'm glad I did not order the fight now.

HBO only distributed the fight. Goldenboy produced it. Therefore they did not have HBO graphics or announce team, it will not appear on HBO next week and HBO does not own the footage.
Like Moralez vs Diaz last year, HBO was not interested in the fight, but the promoter was going to do the PPV anyway. So the promoter can either have it distributed by some no name company like the Arthur Abraham fight on Oct 4, or they can cut HBO in on the profits and allow HBO to distribute it and hopefully pick up all the advertisement and perks that come with being distributed by HBO.
It seems strange that HBO would not be interested in this fight, it was one of the better PPV cards of the year. I guess they have spent their budget or something?Quote:

“The guys in charge nickel-and-dime the low-end people on the production team,” says a current HBO employee. “But they spend thousands of dollars more than they need to spend for travel expenses and other perks for themselves. They act like it’s their birthright to stay at the Four Seasons.”
“Look at the number of people in the Showtime sports department and the number of people at HBO Sports,” adds Bob Arum. “HBO spends more money on unnecessary salaries than you can imagine. There are so many places where they have two people doing the same job. Half of the people at HBO Sports could disappear tomorrow and they wouldn’t be missed.”

The budget crunch has nothing to do with Goldenboy producing the telecast though. At least once a year, either Top rank or Goldenboy will produce it's own PPV and use HBO for distribution.
And it'll now happen a lot more as HBO cut their costs.
Correct. This has happened before. One that comes to mind is last year when Top Rank had the Morales-Diaz PPV. It was marketed by HBO, but there were no HBO commentators, graphics, etc.Quote:
