My day at the Pacquiao/De La Hoya Press Conf. (Pictures!!)
Let me start by asking anyone who posts pics on threads. How do I do so? Can I copy and paste? Or do I have to do it by other means?
My girlfriend currently has my camera with her in another state so she will email me the pictures sometime tomorrow so I can post them up here for everyone to see.
First off, it was a good thing my girlfriend and I got to the Statue of Liberty early because eventually, that place was BANANAS!! I guess I'll go point by point on my first press conference experience.
Filipino Fans: I honestly did not think they would be as crazy as they were. They were chanting "Manny" every three seconds, EVEN before the fighters showed up! When Oscar approached the podium the fans let him hear it (the males fans at least, the Filipina women kept screaming "guapo," which means handsome). I actually thought they got out of hand with the booing and each and everyone of them were going nuts anytime either "Manny" or "Pacquiao" was said. Oscar had about 10-20 supporters TOPS and Pac had HUNDREDS!!!
Bert Sugar: He was one of the first people there and he was getting ready to smoke his cigar and I offerred him a light. I got to have a cigarrette with the man and talked to him for a bit. And people said I would get nothing out of smoking. I got the impression he thinks Manny is going to win, but he never directly stated it..
Nacho Beristain: When he spoke, he basically addressed how the media has said there's nothing he can teach Oscar and how they were all wrong. Then he sat down, short and to the point.
Freddy Roach: Basically talked about Oscar not being able to pull the trigger and guaranteed victory. After the press conference was finished Roach actually hung out with me and my girlfriend while he waited for Manny to finish signing autographs. Probably one of the coolest moments in my life ever!!
Bob Arum: I HOPE someone has the press conference on YOUTUBE because I completely yelled "YEA BOB!" when he approached the podium when it was dead silent and everyone in the media turned towards me.
Oscar De La Hoya: During his portion of the press conference, he kept talking Manny up and making him seem like the biggest challenge of his career and made me realize he is totally confident in fighting him. Apparently, from people I talked to, Oscar was way too easy to get a picture with and sign stuff. I was trying to get through the "Pacquiao sea of people" to make it in time to see Oscar.
Manny Pacquiao: This guy is completely humble considering the way his fans went BONKERS for anything he did. He gave a good speech and he was able to get through it without choppy english (he was reading off a piece of paper). He did make me feel comfortable about this fight with his speech. I am starting to believe he can pull it off now.
"The Stare Down": This fight had to have the most anti-climactic stare down EVER!! Both Pacquiao and De La Hoya tried fighting back smiles while looking at each other. I guess they both started thinking about how much money they are going to make by fighting. I think Arum and Schaffer could've pulled off a more intense staredown...
That's everything in a nutshell. Hopefully I can get the pics up tomorrow!

Re: My day at the Pacquiao/De La Hoya Press Conference
MICK, a little advice about getting your glove signed by Pacquiao when you hit up that press conference.
You basically have to rough your way in, to wherever he is.
Manny also did a portion where he was standing on stage and having the audience throw boxing gloves at him to sign. After he signs it, he attempts to throw the glove back to the person that gave it to him. Let me say, people turn into Deion Sanders cause EVERYONE in the area goes for ANY glove coming there way. There was no more than 5% of people who threw gloves at him that actually got it back.
When Manny was leaving, I followed the mob of people to get him to sign my magazine. I got to touch his shoulder until I was viciously shoved by one of his escorts. You have to be mentally and physically prepared to fight your way through the sea of people to get that glove signed.
I know you know your way around these events and know exactly what to do, but get ready for the Pacfans! GOOD LUCK!!

You now know why it's difficult to fight Manny's fans. ;D;D;D The Philippines has a population of more than 80 million. At least 90% are fans of Manny.

Not only was she at another state, she got called in for work AND she's a nurse, which means a 12-hour work day!! I've never felt so uneasy about not having possession of pictures!
