Without a doubt I can see some advantages, but the fact is if it was not in place Sammy Peters would have got off his stool for the 9th round yesterday, searching for a KO.
Do we really want a stystem which can completly demolarise fighters in mid-fight, and encourages them to surender as Peters did?
I really don't think it would have mattered in this case. Peter was taking a beating and knew that the end was near. I watched the fight and he really had no defense to Vitali's combo's. He was smart not to get off his stool.
Any fighter that is any good is going to know if he is down or up in points regardless of the open system.
Open scoring is pointless, I can see making judges scorecards public after a fight, but really no reason to have it during the fight, there is nothing in the rules that says "a corrupt judgement will have consequences".
You're kidding right? what you are implying is that there are no surprises. A good fighter will know what the judges are thinking. He will know if he is behind on points, regardless of how he thinks he is doing?? Judges scoring always accurately reflects what is happening in the ring?? Another example is Trinidad - De la Hoya. Obviously he is thinking he is ahead on points going into the last round, and that expediency says play it safe. If he knows the judges think otherwise, then he is likely to be more aggressive.
There is no harm in letting a fighter know how the scoring is going. Is there any other sport that you know of where a competitor really doesn't know for sure if he is winning or losing?
Bab idea! we'll just see more boxers ahead on points play it safe in latter rounds.
Open Scoring is the worse thing to happen to boxing since the proliferation of alphabet trinkets.
Its purpose is to have the crowd influence judges during the fight, and to remove all drama from fights.
Have a look at how bad the amateur game has gone if you want to see wha topen scoring will lead to if it is used widley.
Get your nose in front and then keep it there.
Any boxing fan should hate this open scoring bullshit. End of.
