Final Boxing Combinations- Any thoughts/suggestions/input?
I have been trying to figure what are good combinations to use when hitting the heavybag and if I decide to spar again, in sparring. I am 5' 11" 205 lbs, and I'm of average height, but usually the guys I have fought in the past are my height or a little shorter, rarely have I fought someone taller than me. Here are the combinations I have come up with:
1. Jab (move in), Cross
2. Jab (move in), Jab, Cross
3. Jab (move in), Cross, Left Head Hook, Cross
4. Jab (move in), Left Head Hook, Cross, Left Head Hook
5. [Inside Fighting] Right Uppercut, Left Head Hook, Cross
I know that Combos 1, 2, 5 work very well against most opponents. The big question is Combos 3 and 4, which are slight variants of each other. Combo number 3 is easier to remember, and works best typically with opponents who drop their hands. Combo 4 works well with opponents who keep their hands in front of their face, because the Hook sneaks pass the guard and allows the Cross, Left Head Hook to land. Should I use both, or just one or the other? I'm a bit undecided. Your input is appreciated, thanks! :)

Boxing is a dynamic sport mate, don't limit yourself to 5 combinations or you are going to become predictable. Personally the only combinations I have are more like rules. Ie if my back hits the ropes I hook and turn the guy, I go for a body rip I immediately throw an overhand right. If your whole offence is based on, jab move in, right cross, etc. etc. people will eventually figure you out. Just try to master each punch, this will allow you to fill any opening you see with the correct punch, rather than a predetermined combination. This is also why experience is so important for boxing.

What salty said. There comes a time when you don't have to think about what combination to throw, you just go for the openings. Or if there isn't any, you try to force one.
Re: Final Boxing Combinations- Any thoughts/suggestions/input?
there are so many combinations just make sure when you throw a shot the next shot is set up if you get me ?? for example you throw a right hand your body is in position for say a left hook
Re: Final Boxing Combinations- Any thoughts/suggestions/input?
You write down combinations to get yourself used to thinking in combos, and to think what you wish to achieve with each shot.
To explain
Left jab tight-this is to get their hands tight and up
Right hook to the body-get the hands to want to come back down
Overhand right-Power shot
That combination is thought through to deliver maximum damage with minimal effort
But,that doesnt allways mean Ill get it in the ring, its more an excercise to get my brain working towards combinations

If I ever go back and spar, I'll have to try that one out

Not knowing how you train now. I've got some advice - move your god damn feet. Yes you can train to whack the punchbag hard and do fun things like continual punching but try moving in to the bag throw your combo and move off.
Re: Final Boxing Combinations- Any thoughts/suggestions/input?
When I throw combinations on the heavy bag, I try to imagine what my opponent is doing - what defense is he presenting? Am I leading or countering? Is my goal to fight at a distance or get inside? If I'm inside close to the bag, I try to execute combinations that keep me on the inside, and then I imagine I'm punching my way back out.
I don't think I maximized the benefit of the heavy bag until I actually started sparring and tried to use those experiences to drive my bagwork. If you are just that the beginning, it's fine to have a few set combos and just work the bag trying to perfect the technique on the punch and keep balance while throwing combinations. In fact, I'm no expert and I'm just getting back to the gym, so that's what I'm doing now.
