In JLC-Castillo I how did Diego...
Stay in the fight so long? I mean he was never known for the best chin, and JLC is not only a really physically powerful lightweight but an extremely hard hitter (48 of his 56 wins even now have happened by KO, and it used to be a lot higher). JLC has a iron chin, and he walks through virtually everything, up to that point he had always been stopped on cuts. He is one of the best body punchers of this generation, and they honestly stood in there, in a fight which I have never seen so many clean punches traded. I think it still makes fights like Marquez-Vazquez look like a couple of ballerinas. the amazing thing is both guys seemed unbothered for most of the fight by all the heavy artillery that was landed, but I find that especially unbelievable on Corrales' part who if he lacked anything was a little durability.
Re: In JLC-Castillo I how did Diego...
It was just one of those things with no real explanation...Sheer will, determination, adrenaline...Hard to say....
I think that fight showed a lot of what Corrales was really about as a fighter.....I also think that it may have also validated that he did so poorly in the PBF bout because of his outside problems interfeing with his training....(Though I believe he would have lost anyway but that was just an almost effortless showing for Chico)
As for Him lacking durability He was only stopped twice...The stoppage tp Cassamayor was on cuts not an actual KO...(I know a stoppage is a stoppage but in the fight it was not as if Diego was being beaten from Pillar to post and needed to be saved during an onslaught)....So he was fairly durable
Re: In JLC-Castillo I how did Diego...
when he got knocked down the second time he had to go up to his trainer to get his mouthpeice put back in and you clearly heard his trainer tell him as he inserted the gumshield...."now you gotta start throwing some fucking punches" or something along those lines.
60 seconds later the ref jumped in to save castillo and diego had one of the all time great comeback wins!
Re: In JLC-Castillo I how did Diego...
Well I think Castillo is a thudding puncher who physically breaks you down (kind of like Cotto) more than an extremely hard one punch puncher if that makes any sense but still Corrales took a whole lot. The only thing I can think of is that sometimes guys who really struggle to make a weight, like 130 for Diego, seem to be able to take a better shot if they move up a division.
Even the Freitas fight, granted he didn't take that many clean shots from him but he did eat some pretty big right hands. You could say Acelino's power was always a bit overrated and I wouldn't totally disagree but the question going into that fight was how well Chico's chin would hold up and it held up well.

Diego showed awsome hearth that night, but I still think he should have been DQ'd for delibretly spitting out his gumshield.
