Who is going to be the new posterboy for megaevents?
with oscar now most definetly off the boxing map who will now be the new posterboy for megaevents. Oscar was somone who made megaevents even when he fought bums, I remember patrick charpentier fight he packed the alamodome with 50,000 ppl. when he fought steve forbes the crowd was of 30,000 ppl and when he fought yori boy campas it was on ppv which did something like 400k buys. last night hbo crew were hyping up pac to be the replacement of oscar as the box office attraction. I know manny is immensely popular in the phillipines but has not really generated such following in the USA, in fact his fight with marquez did 300 to 400k ppv buys.

Actually after deconstructing Oscar last night,Pac is very viable in the states now.
Hatton is steadily building a fanbase in the states
Kirkland is progressing
Chazz Witherspoon was supposed to be the next big thing, but he blew a fight
Theres a bunch more off the radar right now that deserve watching
Re: Who is going to be the new posterboy for megaevents?
I was thinking about what Oscar had that few other boxers do that made him so popular. His looks obviously helped attract the women but like Ali & Leonard, all 3 won gold medals @ the Olympics. Aside from Tyson (his KO power & being the youngest HW champ), not many fighters have the mass crossover appeal of these 4.
Re: Who is going to be the new posterboy for megaevents?
andre ward won a gold medal and he doesn't even have 1/4 of crossover appeal that oscar, ray or ali had

the one thing that all 3 have in common is charisma, they know how to play the crowd, know how to get people from an old 80 yr old grandma to a 8 yr old kid that doesn't know shit bout the sport like THEM, not as a fighter, but basically as a celebrity, Ali has all the accomplishments in the world, and is truly a legend in the ring, yet what is he known for? His political views and his role in the whole draft issue, he knew how to talk to the crowd and make them listen, Leonard was mister flash a smile and the boy nextdoor that you would wanna take home to your mom, same goes for Oscar. They just pretty much have a certain flair or charisma that makes them appealing to casual fans

Last night will have doubled Manny's popularity and I expect him to become the big attraction of boxing until Haye become's Heavyweight champion of the world. Then we will have a real poster boy to replace Oscar.
