Commonwealth Games - "Counterpunch for boxing"
In preparation for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada,
I had an op-ed piece in the "Times-Colonist" in response to some
criticism of boxing.
In the 10 th paragraph of "Counterpunch for boxing", I wrote
the following:
"The sport of amateur boxing may not be the choicefor middle-class boys
in the privileged neighborhoods of Greater Victoria, but for many
disadvantaged youth-in such places as XXXX and XXX-amateur boxing
provides an important door for many to escape from poverty and despair,
street gangs and crime, and the artificial high of acceptance through
drugs and alcohol. The values that may be obtained from amateur boxing include
self-respect and pride, respect for authority, and respect and compassion for others."
- B. Zelley (1992).
Note: I X'd the places named because it is possible to add a thousand different locations.

I've lived here for years and I rarely read it.

Less then a month ago, I had a front page article with yours truly's face on it. The opening line was, "Not Two years ago XXXXXXXX was a rebel without a cause."

Re: Commonwealth Games - "Counterpunch for boxing"
The 11 th and last paragraph:
"Some of the negative images of professional boxing will guarantee that the call to ban boxing will continue. However, the violence of boxing is a controlled and socially
acceptable activity. The anti-boxing zealots would better serve society by putting
their negative energy into building society by reducing poverty, racism, and crime."
-(Zelley, 1992).

Re: Commonwealth Games - "Counterpunch for boxing"
Looking at the current round of negativity, it appears MMA will face the same type of criticism that boxing has received over the decades. However, it appears that criticism of MMA will focus on the "violence" issue rather that the safety issue.
Re: Commonwealth Games - "Counterpunch for boxing"
it's an interesting concept.
Re: Commonwealth Games - "Counterpunch for boxing"
It is already happening, but the funny side of the MMA thing is the various polls asking folks to pick Boxing vs MMA.
That is like asking folks to pick between rugby and football,
whatever turns your crank, go for it!
But the negativity between some boxing fans and MMA fans
is a little bit comical, but a big waste of space.
When they come out fighting for their version of fighting,
so many end-up appearing like an uncool fool slipping on
a banana peel, or thy raise the smell level to a new high after
stepping-in it or scooping it up throwing it into the wind hoping
it will stick.

I think the level of criticism for MMA will be truly measured when they have a fatality (God forbid) I think that coupled with the "violence" will start having a negative impact on the places that will be willing to stage UFC events etc.
