My sports team is picking up an ex ice addict
This is in regards to Australian Rules Football, so I don't expect most people on here to know about such things.. But I go for the Richmond Tigers.. There are 16 teams in our competition, and over the last few years we've worked our way up from being about the 14 best, to around 9th or 10th last year... Getting into the top 8 means you make it into the finals, and that's what all teams aim for.. We have a relatively young side, which means you build up a bunch of good rookies, and over 6 or 7 years they all mature and you have a 4 or 5 year window where the players are in their prime and you can win finals/grand final. If you picked a good group of youngsters, and have a couple of mature stars to lead them..
Anway, we are on the up and have a decent chance of winning a final in the next 4 or 5 years..
Anyway on to my story, last year there was a player who was probably one of the top 10 to 20 players in the whole league, but he got disgraced and kicked out of the league for being a cocaine and ice addict... He was kicked out of his club on the other side of Australia, and went to the USA to a big drug rehab place...
He tried to get into the draft for 2009.. Our AFL commission approved him to play again, but he has to be tested before and after every game and throughout the week.. It's one of the most strict drug testing rules every applied to a sportsman... But all for his own good and the good of the club. And as long as he stays clean then he shouldn't be fussed about it....
Anyway, a he's still considered one of the better players of the league, and 2 or 3 players like him in a team can really make them improve their placings by 3 or 4 spots, so it's well worth a team picking him up still.
Four teams looked at him and gave serious consideration, but ended up saying no because they thought it was to risky, and their sponsers weren't happy about it...
ANYWAY, my club looks like they are going to pick him up.. Not sure how I should feel about it though.. He is an insanely good player. Very charismatic, was the captain of his old club, and could bring a big spark to our team.. But at the same time, I know how easy it is for people to get ahead of themselves and become complacent when it comes to drugs.. And it can really destroy people around them...
His former club who were in the top 2 or 3 clubs for about 4 years, are near the bottom now after going through all this crap... 2 players refused to play with him and left the club etc..
So I guess question,,, would you like this sort of player to join your sporting team under these sort of circumstances..
If you want to look up anything about it, his name is Ben Cousins, and my club is the Richmond Tigers.. :)

Shhhhhh
27 years of disappointment, even a drug riddled champ will get me excited at this point..
Re: My sports team is picking up an ex ice addict
Ricky Williams was a pot head and there is nothing wrong with that.
Josh Hamilton was a meth addict and he might have been the story of the whole league for baseball this year. Though I would be genuinely surprised if we had any Texas Rangers fans here.
