How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
I was just looking up online and see it won the FOTY ? i was pretty shocked at that if im honest.
Rafael Marquez vs Israel Vasquez 3
Joel Casamayor vs Michael Katsidis
Tomas Villa vs Rogers Mtagwa
Jorge Arce vs Rafael Concepcion
What about these fights ? honestly i thought atleast 3 out of the 4 fights i listed above were easily better than Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto, don't get me wrong Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito was a cracking fight, but i certainly didn't think it was the FOTY. And i was pretty shocked it won FOTY aswell.

Because not that many people have Showtime!
Re: How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
It was a great championship fight that really meant something, in a very strong division. Between two admired and high profile fighters who fought their asses off. A good contrast in styles, a good clash of wills. I suppose there may have been "better" fights from a technical standpoint, but this one ruled because it had "the whole package", including some of the intangibles.
Re: How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
Even if your going by popularity, how did Pacquiao-Marquez 2 no beat it? That fight was amazing, really close, there was knockdown, there was back and forth action. Watching both fights live, I found that fight way more intrigueing because it was close in every round, and they were trading huge punches.
In the Margarito-Cotto fight, Cotto was landing huge punches and Margarito was walking forwad, then it seemed like MArgarito was able to land for a round or two and it was over.
Re: How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
I went with Villa Vs. Mtagwa. No name recognition,no huge purses, title belts,or lucrative rematches waiting in the wings......just all out passion and honest action. Two guys who you probally will not see on a major network but just as worthy of the respect earned by all of the others mentioned.Just a fierce second to second brawl :fight:

Because of its significance. Two top welterweights in a strong division.
Evenly matched fighters.
The suspense.
The rivalry between Puerto Rico fighters and Mexican fighters.
Cotto winning the first half of the fight; Margarito winning the second half of the fight.
The dramatic knockout finish.
Of course, the FOTY will always be constrained by subjectivity, which is why the aforementioned characteristics can be aptly applied to many of the great fights of the year. Personally, I eagerly anticipated this fight and it lived up to my expectations.

From what I understand it won the fans poll for Fight of the year. It's not Ring magazine official choice. I don't think that's been announce yet.
Re: How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
I think Cotto Margarito is absolutely the right choice. It was by far the most significant fight of 2008, the unstoppable Cotto on his way to superstardom and claiming the undisputed welterweight crown was brutally and stunningly knocked out by the iron chinned Tornado Antonio Margarito.
It's a fight that will be remembered for years to come.
The others fights mentioned, well the Arce and Mtagwa fights simply arn't significant at all in the scale of things. The results have no real impact on the boxing world, none of the fighters involved were elite and the fights havn't created any shockwaves through the boxing world.
The Vazquez Marquez fight was brilliant, but it was the third in a trilogy and they won fight of the year last year so fair enough that Cotto and Margarito share the honour for 08. It was a memorable, ultra exciting, hard fought, intense battle between two of the world's finest and ended in dramatic fashion, deserving of all the plaudit's it gets imo.

Yea. Ring Magazine's official "End of the Year" awards come out in the next issue. Those awards were formulated through fan voting.
Me personally, I had a certain criteria when it came to picking my fight of the year. I chose JMM vs Pac II for certain reasons. Cotto vs Marg and Marquez vs Vasquez were both great fights as well.
Cotto vs Margarito had one big momentum swing. Cotto dominated the early rounds and Margarito eventually caught up then, bang, fight over. They were both elite welterweights and the fight lived up to the hype. Couldn't have asked for more but to me it was only the 3rd best fight of 2008.
Marquez vs Vasquez was for a world title, the RING belt, had numerous momentum changes, had a winner decided in the last round, and well surpassed the hype. This was my second choise for fight of the year.
Pacquiao vs Marquez II was my favorite fight of the year for the following reasons:
-WBC title on the line
-RING belt on the line
-Two most elite fighters in the weight class
-Momentum changed within 1 or 2 rounds
-Both fighters were cut and bleeding
-The rematch had been anticipated for 4 years
-The fight was a slugfest and tactical at the same time
-The fight lived up to the hype and expectations
-Most importantly, for me, it was #2 vs #3 P4P at the moment. The P4P rankings are what seperated my decision between this fight and Marquez vs Vasquez.

I think it was a 2 horse race with the first and Cotto-Margarito and I can't get upset. It was a fight with a ton of hype that a lot of people watched and they put on probably the best fight on HBO PPV since Barrera-Morales 3 and it had so much drama it was a crazy fight.
And I think it was a way better fight then Casa-Katsidis just without the knockdowns and it was at a waaay higher level then Villa and Mtagwa even though that was a great fight. In a year that didn't have a great fight at the top level that would have been it but not this year despite how great of a bout it was.

Good posting Amat, I agree completely, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear
Re: How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
Yeah it's easy as internet fans to watch fights all the time and watch them out of context days later or weeks later and rate fights specifically on what happened in the ring. But there is so much more then look at Ali he has I think 5 ring magazine fights of the year and 2 were with Leon Spinks and Doug Jones. Not exactly fights that jump out at you when you watch them in the ring but when you consider the external circumstances it's not hard to see why they got Fights of the year.
There are exceptions like a couple years ago when Monshipor fought Somsak and it won Fight Of The Year simply because in 2006 we had nothing even remotely close to that type of fight in 2006 where this year that probably wouldn't have won.
Plus it's not like it's a bad fight and there is no way you can say with any conviction that any of those 3 were easily better then Cotto-Margarito for the reasons I already mentioned. Bilbo I'm still going to neg rep you just to let you know but if it makes you feel any better you aren't dead wrong here.

Most of Arturo Gatti best fights didn't change a thing in the boxing world, but he still won a ton of FOTY's. I think FOTY's should be just for pure action/drama ETC no matter if its between the two best fighters in a division or against unknown fighters.
I know bigger names add to the drama more, but IMO big names or not a great fight is a great fight and even if it is between two unknown fighters, if its the best FOTY it should still win the FOTY. Just look at 2006 had anyone really heard of those fighters before ? but it still won the FOTY and rightfully so because it was the most action packed fight of the year.
Miguel Cotto/Antonio Margarito was a very good fight but it certainly, didn't have that special feeling i had when i watched Rafael Marquez/Israel Vasquez 3. Or any of the fights i watched above i guess its just personal opinion.

Well i don't know how many good fights were in 1963. But i do know in 1978 Larry Holmes/Ken Norton, was a much better fight than Leon Spinks/Muhammad Ali 1, which was a mostly boring fight until the later rounds.
Re: How Did Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Win FOTY ?
i went with pacquiao-marquez II on the basis of sheer excitement and intensity throughout the fight.
Remember watching that fight in real time at 4 in the morning and going from very sleepy to sat on the edge of my chair tingling with anticipation as to what was gonna happen next.
at the same time though cotto-margarito winning is completely understandable and that is also a fight you could happily watch several times over and never get bored of.
