Williams-Wright fight is finalized
Williams-Wright fight is finalized | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times
Great news I just read this Article ......(Promoters Dan Goossen and Richard Schaefer just confirmed to me on the telephone that a 160-pound fight between former world welterweight champion Paul Williams and ex-super-welterweight champion Winky Wright has been finalized for April 11 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
HBO will televise the bout, Goossen said.
Williams (36-1, 27 knockouts) last beat Verno Phillips by eigth-round technical knockout in Ontario, and Goossen often refers to the tall left-hander as the most-avoided fighter in boxing.
Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) has made the same claim after defeating the likes of Shane Mosley (twice) and Felix Trinidad, but Wright has also been notoriously difficult to come to terms with and he hasn't fought since his July 2007 loss to Bernard Hopkins.
"This gives Paul Williams that name fighter, it puts him up atop the heap as the most preeminent fighter from 147 pounds to 160
" Goossen said. "Fighting a guy who's been avoided too gives him a great opportunity to show his dominance again."
Goossen said the fighters will split the purse 50-50, but he declined to say how much money is in the pot.
This should be a real test for Winky after his Layoff, and to Paul lets see what happens

I think Williams reach and activity will prove to be too much. Of course I've made this same prediction in the other two rising star vs. legend fights and been completely wrong both times. I'm really looking forward to this one. Honestly I'm a little disappointed in Winky's inactivity, it's great to finally be able to see him in action again.

Thanks for that. I honestly think your right there, Winky has a lot of experience and skill and a good boxing brain, Williams is a very good fighter but a guy like Winky could certainly outclass him with the right strategy.
Re: Williams-Wright fight is finalized
A really good matchup. I see Williams taking this one, his activity will be too much for Winky. Winky is old now, and been totally inactive.
Re: Williams-Wright fight is finalized
Doesn't mean Winky hasn't been training, if Winky is in the same form he was against Ike Quartey I see Williams in big trouble because Winky will walk right through the few shots he lands, and Paul Williams is wide open on the inside. If P.Williams is smart and uses his really quick feet and fights on the outside then I see him doing better.
Re: Williams-Wright fight is finalized
This must have just happened today because yesterday I spoke with Gabe Ruelas Gossens Fighter relations head and he said it was not finalized

Winky may not be favored but make no mistake about it, Winky is the most skilled fighter Williams has ever had to face and it's by a significant margin too. So if Williams is outskilled by Winky it's not going to be of any great shot. Look at how much Quintana and even Sharmba Mitchell were able to catch Williams with their left hands, Quintana almost at will.
Williams has never faceed anything like Winky's jab either and I'm guessing if Paul is in range then Winky is going to be able to get it over Williams' low guard. This is the next in the line of Shane and B Hop watch. Williams is a great fighter who's really turned into something but he didn't have a great amateur background and he's been improving but he's still really raw and KOing Carlos Quintana in one round didn't mean that was automatically fixed. Against Phillips he looked better but Winky is better then anyone he's ever faced.
I'm very much looking forward to this I hope Winky is in shape. Bernard mauled him but he looked flatfooted and bothered by the cut. I hope his legs aren't going, I don't think so I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt that he's not going to be shot overnight.

Re: Williams-Wright fight is finalized
Props to Williams as he cetainly seems to be trying to gets the best fights available!
Its about time Wright got back in the ring again & its a fight that he can win if the layoff & rust have not effected him too much.
A win over Williams will propal Wright back to the top & into the limelight & a win for Williams further strengthens his position as one of the best fighters today.
There is so much on the line here for both guys that I hope it spills over come fight time & we as fans get an excellent fight!
