Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
It's bad enough that people duck Williams tremendously, but imagine if he possibly loses to Winky, then fighters ducking him could say something along the lines of "why should I fight someone who lost to an old, ring rusty Wright."
Anyone else see where I'm coming from or is it just me?

fight im genuinely looking forward to
Williams could quite easily be taking on a santos/martinez etc but has instead opted to fight a guy many feel is one of the very few who could give paul williams big problems.
If williams doesnt fight smart he`ll get beat plain and simple and im pretty sure this is gonna be a hell of a lot closer fight than what you`ll find in your local bookmakers.
the potential boxing upset of the year
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
It's a great fight. You are supposing he loses. The punisher may in fact win this one.
No, it will show that he is beatable (although his loss to Quintana should already do that) and possibly make him more marketable. If you are right and he loses, he will have lost to a top fighter, ring rust or not.
The reverse is true. If he handidly beats Winky, will other fighters really line up to fight him?
Outside of the welterweight division, which he supposedly left, who is ducking Williams? Dzinzurik offered to fight him. He just fought for a junior middleweight belt. Maybe Vernon Forrest is ducking him? Sergio Mora ducks everybody (see Jermain Taylor duck).
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
No, I think its a really good matchup. Winky has fought and beat a lot of great fighters. So a loss would be no major shame, but I dont think Williams will lose to Winky though.
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
I think he may be the 1st guy to decisively beat Winky. Winkys inactivity, up and down weight, age, ring years will all catch up with him. And hes not a big puncher so he needs to win on points imo, which I dont likely see happening. The only thing Winky has going for him, and if he wins it will be the reason why, is his southpaw jab. Im sure hes studying tapes of his fellow southpaw Quintana beating Williams.
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
I think that a loss to Winky makes it so no big name fighters will ever fight him and will be the end of his career.

Haha! Oh c'mon! No big name fighters will ever fight him? He will hardly know the difference. Way too grave. Williams is a big draw win/lose/draw against Winky. This fight is way more important to Winky imo. He only has a couple fights left in him. And Williams, the spring chicken he is, will box him and win rounds on handily activity. He may not be able to get a lot through, but surely enough activity to see a UD.
People act so serious about a fighter losing ONE fight. I mean it has held back fighters in the past, but usually it's when they get exposed (a la Mosley Marg).
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
Yah a little Melo-dramatic dude.... Williams is living up to the moniker of being a badass that takes them all on between 147-160. a 2nd loss to a hall of famer is no way a career breaker... Besides paul isint going to lose;D
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
Williams with his "most feared" (which actually may or may not be true) is taking a chance with whoever he fights. Sadly He'd beat winky, no question.

I'm looking forward to this fight, but you still have a good point. Even if Wright looks as sharp as ever somebody might say that. Williams better be excellent on that night.

Why the hell should any welterweight fighter face this guy when he should be fighting at middleweight? Williams should be looking to fight guys like Taylor, Pavlik or Hopkins.
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
Look at the "old-timers" winning big fights recently: Mosley over Margarito and Hopkins over Pavlik. Margarito will still be able to land big fights as will Pavlik. In Pavlik's case, he may actually be better off in his career because of the loss. Boxing fans may think less of them because of the loss, but it didn't affect their marketability. Margarito, barring suspension, will still be in line to fight Cotto in June. Abraham still wants Pavlik. Kessler has spoken of wanting to fight Pavlik.
And if Williams loses to Winky, like I said, more people will line up to fight him because he will appear beatable.
I agree with someone else who said this fight was bigger for Winky. For Winky, it is a crossroads fight. A weak showing will take him out of the picture, a strong showing will make him a contender.
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
I thinks its a great fight. One for the purist
Re: Anyone else think Williams fighting Wright is a bad idea?
The reason this is a great matchup because it sets up winner up for a big Pavlik fight. If Winky wins, he's back on the radar. If Williams wins, he's established himself at MW.

Call me crazy, but Williams has the footwork, handspeed and volume to beat Pavlik and stunt that 1-2
