Ice hockey fights - can someone explain something plse
Are they allowed? What i mean by that is if a couple of players start squaring up to eachother is the fight allowed to develop?
From what ive seen on the web the refs allow the fight to continue until someone goes to ground.
I guess its considered part of the game but do they get sent off/fined/suspended for fighting?
Re: Ice hockey fights - can someone explain something plse
Yes, it is allowed. The severity of the penalty depends on the level of the league, generally. In the NHL, it is 5 minutes for both players, and 2 minutes extra to the guy who started it. There CAN be times when a guy is kicked out if he did something very bad, called a game misconduct, or gross misconduct. But generally it is an accepted part of the game.

Thanks, because you see some of these videos the two that fight say a few words to eachother before it actually kicks off. Like when they put the puck donw you see em talking as if they are agreeing to fight.
Re: Ice hockey fights - can someone explain something plse
That is EXACTLY what they are doing.
"Wanna go?"
"Yeah, sure."
"ok. Off the drop."
"yep."
I've even heard some guys (the guys that fight with honor) say things like, "good luck man" or "let's keep it clean."
YouTube - Who knew Georges Laraque was so nice!

Haha man thats crazy. "wanna do it"..."ok good luck man"
Repped
Edit...need to spread it around a bit first
Re: Ice hockey fights - can someone explain something plse
I think the better question is, "Why is fighting allowed?"
It is thought that to get the momentum back in your teams favor, if one of your teammates wins a fight it will get the rest of the team amped up.
Hence why sometimes you hear the commentators suggest that someone should get in a fight to get this team motivated.
Of course this is to be debated, but i would say that often this is a useful tactic, whether i agree with it or not.

Been checking a few old vids of this online. They are 'enforcers' (learning something new today about a sport i had no clue about)
Seems Bob Probert was an animal.
Tie Domi was quite small for an enforcer.
This Boogaard character is 6ft 9 and broke some mateys cheekbone.
I gather these tough guys are there to watch the star players backs? They can't be that great of a player otherwise why risk injury with fighting if you are talented and are going to score goals.

Bob Probert used to occasionally train at the Kronk gym. I loved Probert, Detroit (along with the Bruins) was my favorite team as a kid.

Hockey fights, these days, are kind of stupid if you ask me. Most teams have goons whose sole job is to fight. They play 3-5 minutes a night, and 99.9% of the time only fight the others teams goon in a premeditated situation.
I know I'm in the minority, but I'd like to see stiffer punishment for fighting. Soon, someone is going to get killed because they hit their head on the ice, it already happened to some poor bastard in a semi-pro or college (I can't remember which) about a month ago. Fights that arise out of hard play and passion (ie. Jerome Iginla's fights) cannot be stopped, nor should they, but this premeditated goon-fighting stuff I'm not sure about. It's not worth someone's life. The fighters are so much bigger and stronger these days, look at a guy like Derek Boogard, he's something like 6'8 270+ lbs, his only job is to fight. Last year, he broke a guys orbital bone with one punch.

He shouldn't have been waving that orbital bone in Boogards face, imo.

Every now and then players get "sent off" by a penalty called 'game misconduct'.....I had a few of those in my day ;)
Usually it's like baseball, a pitcher hits a batter there is a retaliation, a warning is issued and if anything else happens someone has to go. In Ice Hockey it's a player takes it too far with a goalie or a goal scorer, a goon retaliates, and if it continues there are fights to ease the tension but things CAN go awry....

all of that is just ONE game
Re: Ice hockey fights - can someone explain something plse
yeah but knowing you Lyle you were probably arguing with the ref over politics. :)

No, in the State Games of North Carolina, I a defenseman scored a goal (not off a slap shot, but I got the puck and damn near had a breakaway bar for one guy infront of me) which was disallowed because the fucking refs got faked out by my sick moves.......I started skating backwards and the guy defending me was too small and scared to do anything so I turned to my left (as if to take a shot as I am right handed) while turning I went ahead and shot behind my back to the right.....it was GLORIOUS.
.....however, once they disallowed the goal, I went off on the refs....they warned me and I chilled for a little while because I wanted to take my aggression out some other way and so once a kid was trying to dig the puck off the boards I came from about halfway across the rink at full speed and slammed his head into the plexiglass......he bounced off the boards and slid out to center ice, not hurt or seriously injured but with little stars and birdies circling his head.
I was at a disadvantage, their team didn't have a goon worth a damn.
