Re: what Toney could of been
I think he was what he couldve been. He had a great career and was a great fighter! Multiple titles at multiple weight vs. his generations best fighters. Dont know what else he could have done really.
Re: what Toney could of been
Oh,He was a great alright.Make no mistake about it.
He did master the timing out of rounds though,at times too much but A ring general indeed.
Re: what Toney could of been
Anyone else think the RJJ fight took a little out of him. I dont think he was ever quite as good after that fight even tho he did have some good wins after that. Whether he was weight drained or not i find it hard to see just about any SMW beating Jones that night. He was incredible. Discipline would have helped for sure.
If nothing else i think James will forever have the best nickname in my mind.
Anyone with wins over
Nunn Barkley Mcallum Jirov Holyfield and Reggie Johnson has had a great career.
Wish he could have fought Hopkins ar some stage.
Re: what Toney could of been
Toney had a great career and IMO he is one of the most underrated fighters. He was one of the greats, a legend in the sport, but he cheated himself with his lack of discipline. He could have gone even higher than he did IMO.

At the time,I hated to admit it but Im convinced that Jones Jr. totally and completly got into Toneys head, psyched him out.Vast majority of Career it was Toney with supreme confidence and massive swagger.....But to jones credit,he turned the tables inside and outside of the ring.Huge Toney fan...but regardless of weight issues,he was beaten Toney that night.
Following that fight up with a Griffin match was just not well thought out.I think Griffin was a poor mans Jones. Not on same level at but extremely shifty, good thinker.Good call on Hopkins match, prime for prime at Middle....what a dream fight we might have had.
Re: what Toney could of been
I thought he won both Griffen fights and got robbed. Thats another thing, he's been on the wrong end of a few decisions (he beat Samuel Peter in the first fight)
Re: what Toney could of been
Yeah ,I had Toney up by about 3 in the 1st one.He was loading up though and Griffin just hung in,stayed busy, bad style match up for Toney.Toney could be a roller coaster really.....for the ones that he was shafted in,there were a few that he recieved gift wrapped. I think he was jobbed in the 1st Rahman,Peter fights,And won the 1st McCallum scrap.....but was gifted in with Tiberi,Oquendo fights.Had the Johnson fight a draw :-X.
He could slack off in there,If that one did come off...Hokins vs. Toney.Thats why I'd favor Hopkins.Much more focused and intent. That would have been a gem of a fight....two of the best minds seen over the last couple of decades Imo.
Re: what Toney could of been
the jones fight mentally took a lot out of him.
No shame in getting beat but for a good 11rounds or so jones was just playing with him and that must of been painful to take.
Re: what Toney could of been
It's hard to say, if he had discipline he may have had a very different personality, and may not have had the calmness under fire which defined his style at his best.

I don't think training hard and watching his weight would make him lose his demeanor inside the ring. I think what he meant of discipline was more of physically.
Re: what Toney could of been
...i think toney should've and could've been in shape during his career.
Re: what Toney could of been
I think he could have been a great consistent from 160lbs to 175lbs similar to B-Hop. Instead he became a boozing, flabby heavyweight looking to inspire a generation of undertrained, ill-disciplined slobs. Chris Arreola must worship the ground he waddles on
