What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
I know not many out there are big fans of Chris...I admit I was because he managed to win HW titles in an era of big big men by doing what we see rarely these days...Purely Boxing.....
Was he flashy or was he exciting???....No but astill always a professional in and out of the ring...a good face for the sport....
He did something else I admired...He tried to drop down to LHW when HW boxing became comepletly dead and tried to make another run at a weight more naturally suited for him....Sadly enough he was 37 and the drop effected him too much...he was embaressed with not only a KO loss but not even being competitive against a guy he would have outboxed easily during his prime years...(I am not making that sound as If Shaun George was a bum because he is a tough kid but you get the idea)...
Why now is he fighting at CW against a guy with a 4-3 record...yes he won but c'mon Chris...
Shame to see these gys do this to themselves out of the need to stay in the ring......
Maybe he and Jones can start a division for the washed up or something..
TYhese two guys can have an elimination bout to see who fights for the Title
Shannon Miller
Phillip Hammac
Kind of sad really

I agree it is a said state of affairs. For a guy like RJJ he has plenty of money and doesnt need to fight but I wonder if Byrd needs the cash.
Re: What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
im not going to bash chris byrd with holyfield still fighting
i think the hw div is going to be all locked up for the next few years with the klitchko's in the driver seat. and im not going to complain about that :)
Re: What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
Well that's the cruiserweight division for you ;)
Byrd really should either have stayed at heavyweight where he was tried, tested, and a solid fighter or totally retired.
Older fighters cutting lots of weight to move down to a weight class RARELY works out for the best, just ask Roy Jones Jr., Oscar De la Hoya, or hell Chris Byrd after his stint at light heavyweight
Re: What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
Early in career,I disliked Byrd. But like many,he grew on me,Respected the fact that he fought all comers and called out anyone that would listen. He sort of turned the corner and seemed to fight more aggressively almost to make an impression/statement.Age combined with battle damage accumulated but you could not question his heart..ever.I was weary of his Lt Heavy quest to re event himself and he showed all the signs of a past it fighter George, man it was sad.You can shed the weight, but not the damage and years.I hope he retires fast,The man is as sharp as they come and seemingly has a great family.Time to get out but like many...continues to grasp at memories with faded skills, boosted by pride.
Re: What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
I agree man....Chris Byrd has a ton of heart, but he just can't compete anymore. I think maybe it would be good for him to start up a gym and be a trainer or something. He has a very unique style and it served him well and everyone knows there is a market for trainers who teach BOXING and not just power punching.
You look at who he fought at heavyweight and you just wonder how he ever made it this far...he's a tough tough fighter.
Wladimir (twice), Vitali, Ibeabuchi, Tua, Holyfield, Golota, Oquendo, McCline.....those are some good fighters and he had some big wins too

You gotta know when to hold 'em and you gotta know when to fold 'em.

I actually think he could be a good analyst. Maybe Showtime or ESPN (if they went to a three man team.)

Re: What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
After Byrd lost the title to Klitschko, I recommended to him to move to cruiserweight. He said he was considering it but returned as a heavyweight and lost to Povetkin. Then rumors came out he was going to drop to Lightheavy. I recommended that it was too much weight loss and again mentioned cruiserweight. He said he felt fine and against my suggestions got beat as I had feared he would. Now he's returning at cuiserweight! Is it too late? I don't know but it is the best weight for him.
And I have no problem with him comming back against a "bum". One step at a time, this makes a true comeback. There is time for him to rebuild. I am not expecting too much but it beats fighting 240 lb. guys and what happens, happens.
Re: What is wrong with Chris Byrd fighting still...Against bums!!!
I agree that 174 was way too deep a drop for him. His legs were gone by the first round in that fight he just looked unsafe in there. He should have went to Cruiserweight 3 years ago. But there's no reason he won't be successful at Cruiserweight. I think he can beat the guy who beat Enzo Mac, with ease. The guy who beat him on the Khan Barerra card.
