Any computer buffs able to help me?
Can anyone identify what this is? The slot above my hard drive that is.

I've always wondered what it's for and I'm wondering what I can use it for.
Re: Any computer buffs able to help me?
The slot to the left is a PCMCIA slot, you can get all sorts of PCMCIA cards, most common being a wireless card. The slot on top of the earphone jack looks like an SD card reader, not sure which slot you mean.
The square device connection to the left of the earphone jack is for an external flux capacitor.
Hope this helps.
Re: Any computer buffs able to help me?
memphis is dead right, my wife uses the PCMCIA with an adapter for her flash memory from her camera.
Re: Any computer buffs able to help me?
Right, the "slot" is for a network card.. If that's what you're referring to..
you could get a network card, insert it into the slot, and have the capablity to connect to wireless networks..
Don't listen to memphis about the flux capacitor slot.. Whatever you plug into that slot explodes.. careful.

Thanks for the replies chaps!
My lappies already wireless so what other PCMCIA things can you get?
And Memphis, really, what is that thing next to the headphone socket?

Firewire is just a faster USB drive basically.. Transfers things faster (around double time) that a USB port would.. Nothing fantastic unless you do a lot of data transfer from PC to PC or something to that extent..
Re: Any computer buffs able to help me?
Ok I googled and all I can find are internet cards, sound cards, USB cards and TV tuner cards.
No other uses for PCMCIA cards?

External can opener and vacuum cleaner are still in their design phases.. ;D
kidding.. to be honest i've never used anything besides a wireless network card for it.. Was there something specific you were trying to do? Or just wondering it's capabilities?

I was wondering what it was for and was maybe hoping I could upgrade my lappy somehow or add something cool. Now I know what it is I just want to know (apart from the ones I mentioned) what connects to it.
