YES, very, very much looking forward to ringside views tomorrow night at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas for "Lightweight Lightning," presented by Golden Boy Promotions. I think it will be a lot better than watching the latest installment of Fast & Furious, the movie. The ringside seats should allow for ample hearing of the punches, the violence.
The event will also feature a prominent presence by Tecate, as the beer beverage maker will provide handouts, give-aways, and photo ops. Undoubtedly, several prominent boxing stars will be present.
On with the predictions . . .
My record as an Examiner thus far is 1-0. Perfect and undefeated. As I predicted the victory of Juan Manuel Marquez over David Diaz in February.
Edwin Valero vs. Antonio Pitalua
Winner: Valero - in a tough fight, perhaps by decision
The main event features Edwin Valero (24-0, 24 KOs) from Venezuela against Colombian warrior Antonio Pitalua (46-3, 40 KOs) for the WBC Interim World Lightweight crown (left vacant by Manny Pacquiao).
Rolando "Pochito" Reyes vs. Julio Diaz
Winner: DiazRolando "Pochito" Reyes (30-4-2, 19 KOs) faces off against former World Champion and California native Julio Diaz (36-4, 26 KOs).
Jesus Chavez vs. Michael Katsidis
Winner: Katsidis - probably by decisionThe third bout features Austin native Jesus Chavez (44-4, 30 KOs), a former Lightweight World Champion, who squares off against the rugged Australian Michael Katsidis (24-2, 20KOs). Chavez probably takes this fight, unless Katsidis can deliver a surprising hook or blow to the body.
Vicente Escobedo vs. Carlos Hernandez
Winner: Hernandez2004 U.S. Olympian Vicente Escobedo will take his place and face off against Texas native and former World Champion Carlos Hernandez (43-7-1, 24 KOs). Hernandez comes in as a favorite in this fight.
