Cuban Olympic Gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux's pro debut a disgraceful mismatch

A horiffic mismatch and very painful to watch. Here is a 28-year old guy who won Two Gold Medals with 300-400 amature bouts fighting a 21 year old kid with a 3-2 record who lost his last two fights and who came in on short notice and who landed one punch in the entire fight. This is how fighters can be permanently injured in the ring. Thank God referee Samuel Burgos knew enough to simply step in and say "no more."

Pissed me off more they didn't show the fight here on TSN in Canada... bastards. I think Rigondeaux wasn't trying to close the show, he was working on his skills regardless of the class of opponent, he didn't try to finish him early or stop him, when he had the guy hurt, I think he was taking it easy.

It was clear that Noriega didn't really want to be there. I agree that Rigondeaux necessitates a higher caliber opponent, for exactly the reasons you stated.

What stood out to me the most was the fact that Rigondeaux landed flush a bunch of times but wasn't able to really hurt his opponent. He wobbled him yes. But the way he landed flush, he should of stopped him. His power looks to be on the decent side

Seems to be happening more and more.Maybe its all catching up to me but it just seems all of these Amatuer stand outs are being force fed,rushed to market Gamboa styla...media-wise.....and practically being proclaimed Champion before they have even fought their very first professional round or faced any true adversity.At any moment I expected Teddy to jump into the ring and kiss him on the forehead.

Juan Noriega clearly isn't a good fighter, but how do you know what his chin is like? Also I only saw Rigondeaux land one really flush left cross with Juan coming in, at the end of the first round. Besides he only landed his right hook cleanly, and everytime he did that Juan was stumpling backwards, and Rigondeaux's hook is nowhere near as powerful as his left cross.

As for Spicoli, Rigondeaux deserves all the praise he gets, he is the most impressive fighter to go pro since ROy JOnes Jr, I honestly believe that. I wish he was younger, but his skill is undeniable, and a year or two down the road from now, baring Amir Khan's chin, I will be saying I told you so to everyone who is overlooking him.

the problem with some of the cubans fighter is that they are surrounded by people telling them all day long they're the best and the next big thing, the other doesn't know how to box compared to them and all this bullshit.

and, a large majority of them, becomes lazy at the gym..not all, but the so called upcoming (from what I heard about Solis and Gomez, in fact) :-)

Holmcall is more involved in boxing than I am so he should know if this worse than most but honestly some of this I think is just over the fact that it was televised, cause lets face it a lot of guys who are prospect fodder, whether they are debut guys or not are pretty horrible.

I don't think the Rigo or the Jacobs were that bad.
I mean both Rigo & Jacobs are starting off (at that time that was Jacobs 2nd fight).

Fighters like Lopez & Noriega know what the matchup is.
Noriega didn't have to take the fight. But he did and he got paid.


I don't have issues with either one of those matchups if I'm honest.


The really bad shit can be seen in PongsaShits record where he was a title holder with 50+ fights 60+ fights fighting guys 4-15-1 for the title. That shit is fucken mind blowing.

On the other hand I've witnessed how fighters like Noriega & Lopez are found and in some ways "used"...
