Chad Dawson vacates IBF Title
http://www.eastsideboxing.com/fotos/dawson64353.jpgPANAMA CITY, PANAMA (May 27, 2009) – Undefeated two-time light heavyweight champion CHAD DAWSON informed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) that he has vacated its title, effective immediately. Promoter Gary Shaw personally delivered the letter to the IBF at its annual convention which is being held in Panama City, Panama. “The IBF rejected our request for an exception to making an immediate title defense against mandatory challenger Tavoris Cloud and inasmuch as no major television network was willing to buy the fight, the IBF left us little choice,” said Shaw.
“I respect the IBF’s decision but the fight they were forcing us to do was commercially unviable. On behalf of Chad, we thank the IBF for the opportunity to fight for its title and to defend it. It’s an honor Chad will always cherish. Now it’s on to bigger and better. Chad looks forward to defending his International Boxing Organization title against the cream of the crop and unencumbered..”
Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs), from New Haven, Conn., serving his second term as light heavyweight champion, successfully defended the IBF and IBO titles on May 9 in a rematch against former world champion Antonio Tarver, whom he dethroned last October. Dawson won his first world title in 2007, dethroning undefeated defending WBC champion Tomasz Adamek. He successfully defended the WBC title three times, including a victory over former world champion Glen Johnson, before vacating that title to challenge Tarver.

Apparently that is what happened. HBO has pressured him into a rematch with Johnson, thus making Dawson unable to meet the IBF mandatory, Tarvis Cloud.

Good on HBO if that's the case! Apart from Hopkins/ Dawson the rematch with Johnson is the fight that needs to happen

Seems bullshit to me, you cant tell me a network didnt want to pick up that fight. Sounds like another too high risk low reward situation. Cloud looks hungry to me I would rather see him get the shot if its not gonna be Glen Johnson. Maybe one more win for Cloud on TV may get him the shot. Cloud looks like a soild up and comer to me.

Maybe now we know why HBO....almost becoming its own alphabet soup body,didnt want any part of Adamek vs. Johnson ? I wouldn't mind a Dawson/Cloud fight,though Cloud is still a bit green and unknown (At least for HBO:-X).Shite...seen much,much worse 'Mandatorys' out there.

Theres talk of Dawson moving down to 168 after the Johnson rematch ;)

If you read the article I posted, it notes that Cloud was offered a televised fight on HBO on the undercard of Dawson vs Johnson II, with a guarantee that the winners of the two fights would fight each other on a later HBO broadcast. Cloud however turned this deal down, and instead of the exposure of fighting on HBO he will fight some tomato can selected by the IBF for the now vacant IBF title.
Who ever made that decision for Cloud has horribly mismanaged his career.
