Poor condition of 160 pounds
This 160 division outside the 3 champs has no depth at all. At least not to non-Europeans. The best example is Felix Sturms next opponent. On Boxrec he is ranked 7th and holds the European belt. He has several good wins over undefeated opponents and went 11 round with Arthur Abraham. Yet people still say how Sturm is fighting another bum, just presuming he's a stiff. There is shockingly little depth there (with us not knowing how much Winky Wright has left and Paul Williams going down to 154) so the only hope is the 3 champs taking on one another or some 168'ers coming down.
Re: Poor condition of 160 pounds
Well Paul Williams would fight at 160 if he could get a big fight IMO, and Daniel Jacobs looks like a decent prospect, but yeah besides that its very top heavy. Are we including Felix Sturm when we say the division is top heavy? He might as well not even exist.
Re: Poor condition of 160 pounds
Hmmm I think it has some depth I just think that some of the higher rated fighters/champions make it look bad because they don't want to fight one another. Sturm has been ducking and dodging and Pavlik seems to be fighting whatever demons he has along with the Hopkins loss. Abraham to me is the 1 calling out every one and they all seem to be ducking him. Wright,Duddy and Mundine are established contenders. And rising contenders Jacobs, Barker, Pirog and throw Williams in the mix and I think it is not that bad of a division. Cruisers are worst.
Re: Poor condition of 160 pounds
OK, you have Pavlik, Abraham, and Sturm as title holders you've got a bunch of quality journeymen (they aren't of shocking quality or anything, but they are solid fighters) and at light middleweight is where the action is and these guys will eventually move up: John Duddy, Vernon Forrest, James Kirkland, Joe Greene, and someone like Andre Ward could move down.
It gets like this every so often, everyone vacates a division, now Kelly Pavlik HAS to make these fights happen at least the Abraham fight even if he does fight him in Germany. Pavlik needs to focus on how he's going to change up his style to fight at 168 where he is just GOD AWFUL.
