12oz is fine for most of your boxing work, including sparring. There's a certain realism that you get in training while using similar ounce gloves as you'd use in competition. Bigger gloves won't translate into faster hand-speed, or improved muscular endurance. For the beginner, big gloves can even become a deterrent in learning proper defense. Why learn how to slip and parry punches when each hand is encapsulated in a 14-16 oz punch shield. It can lull boxers into feeling a false sense of security as they think they'll be ok so long as they keep their hands up. On the other hand, using a similar weight boxing glove as you'd use in competition means you're going to need to learn your craft. Just like the old proverb goes, "Necessity is the mother of all invention!"
I've been sparring with 16 oz gloves for a couple years now and I must admit that is EXACTLY what I do.
I cover up and keep my hands up and it works real good.
But I have always aknowledged that it works well becus I have big 16 oz gloves on to protect my face.
Granted I can slip a jab, and a right hand or two.
But my primary form of defense is covering up a la Winky Wright.
For bags and Pads 16oz are great because if you can manage speed and not get arm weary with the 16oz on when you put on a pair of 8oz it is like fighting barefisted....
I don't recommend the mistake of actually thinking the 16oz would be the same effect when sparring though...Like Chris stated in his post it can lead to a FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY
