Did they know they would lose?
This is probably going to piss alot of people off but I don't know how De la Hoya and Marquez didn't know how much of an effect having to lose and go up so much in weight would cause. I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist but once I started thinking about it I couldn't help but get a little paranoid. They were 35 and 36, their last performances before their respective fights didn't show their past form, they must have known they were close to retirement. During training they were confident about the weight but afterwards they say it effected them. Why did Oscar come in so low? Why wasn't a clause inserted that would cancel the Mayweather Marquez fight should Floyd exceed the limit? I know it wasn't a title fight but they must have realized the handicap the cathweight itself faced. In his post fight interview De la Hoya said "when you face a great fighter like Manny, then it is almost expected". I know it was 24/7 but why did Marquez suddenly reveal he drank his own urine when he said he'd done it his last five fights. As soon as the fight ends another Golden Boy Promotion is hyped even by Oscar during Marquez's post fight conference. I don't wanna piss people off but with the ammount of money at hand I just can't imagine how such elite professionals with so much access to sporting science, at their age and with the history so stacked against them could honestly believe they would not be significantly handicapped.

They did it for the money. Plain and simple.

Shame really aint it....... Just for the money. Some top top fights to be made, money aside.
Re: Did they know they would lose?
The will have both known that it could affect them and take them out of their depth. Maybe not by how much but they would have known it was taking them outside of their comfort zone.
Like has been said - they also knew how much they would get paid.
Re: Did they know they would lose?
IMO with De La Hoya's case it's a no brainier, get the money and get out!
In Marquez's case it's a little more difficult because he could have lined up a number of fights (how many would breach $1M) and he'd still be looking for that trilogy with Pacquiao. Can he revive his career once again and still line up a third fight? Only time will tell if he actually made the right move when it comes to career earnings.
Re: Did they know they would lose?
In Marquez' case, he's a proud fighter with a storied resume and I'm sure he thought he could be PBF. The pile of money he was earning probably helped convince him taking the fight was the right thing to do, but I'm sure he thought he could win. I understand the argument that he never made the money he should have and as such allowed that to influence his decision making, and there could be some validity to it, but I sure he thought he could win right up until the middle of the fight.
For Oscar, I think pretty much the same thing. He sure as shit didn't need the money, though he strikes me as the type of person who just loves the limelight and I think that was his primary motivation for fighting Pac. He wanted to be involved in one last megafight and I genuinely think he thought Pac would just be too small for him, regardless of the effects cutting the weight had. I'm sure right around round 1 or 2 he realized he was fucked though.
