Pacman Vs Mayweather potentially the biggest fight since Hagler Vs Leonard?
I think so. Think about it. How often do we see 2 elite fighters at the top of their game face each other in the ring?. Each of these fighters have already cemented their legacy and claimed a place among history's hall of fame legends.
Also this is a 50 - 50 pick em fight, I bet we will see more pundits than ever sitting on the fence for this one. Myself included!
I told myself never to bet against the ring generalship and KO power of Mayweather again but Pacman's speed, power and the way he picks his angles is astonishing. I can't wait for this fight, it has got to happen!
The only other fights that spring to mind as being contenders for the biggest fight of the last 2 decades are Jones Jr Vs Toney, Tyson Vs Lewis, Tyson Vs Holyfield and ODLH Vs Mayweather....however even these monsters have their flaws.....the Jones Jr and Toney fight was a contest for P4P number 1 but this fight went unnoticed by the general sports fan and both fighters were still fighting early on in their careers; the Tyson / Holyfield fight doesn't hold up because at the time Holyfield was a relative unknown to the public and his celebrity profile was boosted due to his win; Tyson Vs Lewis was one of the most successful pay per view fights ever for obvious reasons but Tyson had already been exposed by Holyfield as having lost much of his arsenal and most new he wasn't the fighter he once was. Finally we have the ODLH Vs Mayweather fight (the most succesful pay per view ever I believe?) - an intreguing fight between 2 gifted fighters but we all new that following his loss to Hopkins ODLH was on the slide and the general sportsfan only became aware of Mayweather's existance because of the massive amount of promotion and publicity prior to the fight.
None of the above arguments apply to a PBF Vs Pacman fight after last night's fight - I've been approached by numerous friends and family today asking me what I thought of the Pacquiao Vs Cotto fight and this rarely happens unless a British fighter has fought!.
If you disagree then feel free to let it be known. I'd love to hear who everyone thinks is the highest profile fight of the last 20 years? :)
Re: Pacman Vs Mayweather potentially the biggest fight since Hagler Vs Leonard?
I personally don't think it's the biggest since Hagler-SRL...
your leaving out JCC vs. Pernell out and ODLH vs. Tito.
Just want to mention RJJ-Toney was not for the #1 P4P spot that title belonged to Sweet Pea during that time.
Re: Pacman Vs Mayweather potentially the biggest fight since Hagler Vs Leonard?
Yes, I do think it would be the biggest fight since Hagler-Leonard.
The only other fight in that span that was #1 vs. #2 PFP was Whitaker-Chavez, and both Floyd and Manny have become bigger PPV stars than either Chavez or Whitaker. And the winner of Floyd-Manny will likely be viewed as a better fighter historically than either Whitaker or Chavez.

I don't think you can say that with any degree of certainty. It would be very very close. Pernell was at least as unpenetratable as Mayweather in his prime, and Chavez had an amazing amount of fights, though I think his ducking of many great fighters will affect his legacy...like for example failing to fight pernell again after pernell was robbed.
ODLH ended up losing (albeit very closely) too many big fights and Tito was exposed as a one-trick pony by ODLH himself, so its fair to say both Pac and Mayweather will surpass those two.
Re: Pacman Vs Mayweather potentially the biggest fight since Hagler Vs Leonard?
yeah man. I agree.
Hagler is my favorite fighter of all time. I was pissed with outcome of that fight, but gave credit to Leonard for the bs points win.
I hope Manny wins this one. He should if he comes in with a plan like he did last night.
Re: Pacman Vs Mayweather potentially the biggest fight since Hagler Vs Leonard?
Almost unquestionably but we're leaving out Tyson-Holyfield, both of them which were huge aswell as Tyson-Lewis.
In my lifetime there won't have been a bigger fight, imo at least. I agree with everything that SweetPea said.
Re: Pacman Vs Mayweather potentially the biggest fight since Hagler Vs Leonard?
Not sure how Tyson vs anyone gets put in this category. Tyson was absolutely destroyed by the only 2 good fighters he fought in his entire career. This is like DLH-Tito.

In terms of the fight being similar to ODLH Vs Tito - yeah it is similar in that both fighters were at the top of their game and already had big wins under their belt. Publicity-wise this fight doesn't come close as to how much attention and publicity a Mayweather Vs Pacman fight would get! From what I remember outside of the U.S ODLH Vs Tito had very little attention outside of the U.S compared to what even Pacman Vs Cotto got.

That is fair enough and I agree with you (assuming your with me in that Tyson was overrated), but Tyson was a huge draw and his fight with Holyfield has to be one of the most anticipated in history. They are 2 of the biggest names the Glamour division has ever produced and we had to wait 5 years for it to happen after it was originally signed. It was huge news in the day and I remember it being all over the papers over here for the week before and after the fight and it wasn't even involving a Brit. As big as this fight will be (Pac-Mayweather) I don't see it getting that kind of media coverage in the UK!
