Boxing Perspective: Miguel Cotto - A Statue Slowly Getting Nicked

Miguel Cotto is a proven warrior. He has been more judged by his wins than his losses. He has started out as a stone statue, barely being disturbed by many impressive agile boxers.

Manny Pacquaio has nicked that statue. Pacquaio gets through his fights by determination. His faith in his skill has catapulted him into a boxer that is becoming more rare as time goes on.

His losses have not defined him. He has risen above the average level and found his prime. Has Pacquiao been overlooked at the start of his career until now?

Cotto has been regarded as unbeatable, tough, strong, unwilling to mask his aggression. Pacquiao's victory over such an incredible fighter has undoubtedly validated his talent as a phenomena.

How can anyone view Cotto as unbeatable? If anything its was his few flaws amongst a myriad of talents that made him so intriguing. I think he would have been absolutely unstoppable if he had the chin of Clottey or Mosley. I think he is and was a great fighter with so many qualities both inside and outside the ring that were as impressive as anyone's, but he just didn't have it all. For all his mental fortitude he just didn't quite have the physical toughness to endure against certain opponents. For all his technical brilliance, he was a good defensive fighter and an amazing offensive fighter, but just a little too easy to hit when he started getting sloppy. For all his humble and endearing qualities he had his problems domestically with both his uncle and his wife.

I just believe he went through too many wars, too close in proximity. There are the wars that break you and the wars that make you grow, and I think Cotto had too many fights that did both.

although deemed as controversial because many saw it going either way, Cotto beat Clottey. It was a tough fight, and if Clottey had the decisions of all the judges, it would've been another controversial tale. that was definitely a close fight. cotto's first loss included a cheater...Margarito. so yes, cotto could be regarded as unbeatable, up until recently. margarito was a fraud up against cotto. as for Pacquiao, the accusations are speculations. and it was a durable, rough, tough fighter Cotto lost to. any flaws of any boxers are additions to their uniqueness, and could also be additions to their weaknesses.
