Joan Guzman vs Joel Casamayor is being work out for Mayweather undercard May 1st

Sources close to both camp confirm that a Guzman vs Casamayor bout is likely for the Mayweather undercard and the only hold up is Casamayor want the fight to be at a catch weight but Guzman team want it for 135lb.REMEMBER WHERE U HEARD IT FROM.....

Casamayor is past it, Guzman should win clearly.

Guzman should of lost his last fight. He's not the fighter everybody made him out to be. He's fast but has no power what's so ever. He'll start fast and get some rounds. But Casamayor will than take him to school. Casamayor is clearly not the great fighter he once was. And he's coming off a sub-par performance against some bum. But that was due mostly to rust. He did the smart thing by taking a fight as soon as possible. He's been in this situation before. He looked rusty and shot against Santa Cruz and was lucky to get an unjust win. He than quickly sign to fight against the than undefeated Michael Katsidis. Who was super hot and had people like Max Kellerman nearly hyperventilating whenever he mention his name. Casamayor showed everybody how shot he was when he took Katsidis 0 with an 11th round knock out. I expect a similar performance from Joel.

To be fair though VD, you could say Joan Guzman vs Ali Funeka. Is no different to Joel Casamayor vs Santa Cruz. They were both rusty and plus Joan Guzman is better at the lower weightclasses aswell.

Plus the height difference between him and Ali Funeka, was ridiculous. But i actually thought Joan Guzman, was fighting well in the early rounds. Then he totally stopped what was working for him, which really baffled me.

But at Super Bantamweight and ETC. Joan Guzman was the real deal, he had enough power and plenty of skill to back it up.

The problem with Joan Guzman is that its took him so long, just to fight some B+ fighters. That right now he is probably already a bit past his peak, without ever really having that legacy making fight.

As for Joel Casamayor i haven't seen his last fight, so i can't comment. But i thought he still looked pretty good vs JMM, although obviously past his peak.

I think this fight is a hard one to call, Joel Casamayor is the real legit Lightweight. But he has seen better days, and Joan Guzman is also probably past his peak. Because his style is almost soley relying on speed. So its a tough one to call at the moment IMO.

Casamayor has little chance IMO, he's done. Guzman beats him here, too skilled. Lets hope Guzman can start getting some big names on his resume soon enough. He's been such a waste over the last few years.

VD im pretty sure Casamayor did not look that impressive against Katsidis. He had Katsidis down early and could not finish him and then was nearly knocked out himself in the later rounds and I think he would of been stopped if Katsidis hadnt of made a novice mistake and rushed into the 11th round against a boxer of Casamayors calibre.

Sort of a contest to see who has less left if you ask me.Casa is miles past it and so hot and cold now.Guzman ,to me, looked terrible in spots with Funeka.Way to much time off.Hit flush often and busted up,loading up like a one punch slugger and plodding as can be.I think Funeka might have stopped him but his mentality didn't allow it.

Most fighters Casamayor age would not of got back in the ring and continue fighting. They pretty much would of been counted out. And Katsidis doesn't make that mistake if Casamayor didn't sucker him into it.

i really wish this fight pushes through. i wanna see guzman fight properly. casamayor has a chance but i think hes well past it.

if this fight goes through as mayweather vs. mosley undercard, this event definitely one-ups pac clottey.

I think Casamayor takes this one late, for all the defensive wizardry Guzman is known for he has no offense to keep Casa honest. If Funeka was able to walk through Guzman's jabs and left hooks, there is no reason to think Casa can't do the same. The next obvious thing is to point out Casa doesn't have the volume of Funeka, to that I say he has something much more important pinpoint accuracy with a short left hand.

Guzman is going to look like a phenom for about 3 rounds.

Casa will start landing some meaningful shots in the mid-rounds

Casa will stop Guzman in the championship rounds.

There is NO way in hell this undercard is going to have even a +/-1% difference in attendance or PPV sales. Nobody would pay a penny to see these two has beens duke it out for the "King of Past Prime"!

A lot of people wrote off Guzman b/c of his last performance. Guzman is a very slick boxer. I think he was doing pretty well against Funeka until that nasty head butt shut his eye. He really could not see the punches coming anymore. It will be interesting to see what he's got left after his gift of a draw last time out. He'll get by in this match just based on the fact Casa won't be able to bust him up like Funeka did. I'm pretty sure of that.

Guzman has been boxing forever! In fact, He and Casa may bring in just as much if not more ring experience than Jones-Hopkins!

Guzman's nose was smashed to bits in the third round, it pissed blood for the rest of the fight, obviously hampering his breathing. Now take into account his stamina has looked suspect for the past few years (probably due to inactivity), it's understandable he went off the boil.

I totally forgot about that, and that did seem to change the fight around dramatically. I can't remember if it was a headbutt or ETC, i think i'll rewatch that round later on.

It was a punch that smashed his nose in the 3rd, a headbutt in the 4th done his eye. I don't think the eye cut affected him half as much as the nose. You could see him constantly breathing through his mouth not long after it happened.

Agreed. Thanks for refreshing my memory on the fight, Fenster. But I am gonna have to say the eye wasn't helping.. Funeka fought a very dirty fight. I think the ref was pretty forgiving of him, which led to a lot of Guzman getting tagged.

Usually in this stance I take the fighters side (Funeka) and not the boxer's, but the ref would never do anything, but warn Funeka for anything, and it was pretty apparent in the middle rounds Guzman was bothered by more than just getting hit in the head with gloves.

I don't know what it was about this fight... I knew the decision was going the wrong way, just like Martirosyen/Ouma, and Aurnoutis-Coleman. All of these took way too long for the judges to turn in their scores. Three really bad decisions in just a couple months. What a load of crap.
