Hardest punching heavyweight- Joey Abell
Don Elbaum telephoned last week to spread a message: Boxing fans should no longer be depressed about the demise of Pacquiao-Mayweather. A new mega-fight is on the horizon.
Elbaum is an adviser to Joey Abell; a 28-year-old heavyweight from Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Joey has a (somewhat padded) 25-and-4 record, with 24 of his victories coming by way of knockout.
Elbaum swears that Abell is “the hardest punching heavyweight since John L. Sullivan.” He further proclaims, “When it comes to pure punching power, I’d rank Joey, Earnie Shavers, and Mike Tyson one-two-three in that order.”
Note to readers: When pressed, Elbaum acknowledges, “To be completely honest, Earnie Shavers at his peak might have punched as hard as Joey.”
2008 was a bad year for Abell. On April 26, 2008, he was knocked out in four rounds by Andrew Greely, who has lost 16 of his last 17 fights (the sole win coming against Abell). On September 5th, Joey lost a six-round decision to 44-year-old Al Cole (who was coming off a 42-month layoff and three consecutive losses). Then, on November 28th, he was disqualified in a bout against Jason Nicholson, who has triumphed twice in his most recent 27 outings.
But Elbaum is quick to note that Abell rebounded in 2009 with five wins over “the toughest guys I could find; and they were hard to find because most guys are afraid to fight Joey.

Re: Hardest punching heavyweight- Joey Abell
I've never seen or heard of this guy. So I've never seen him actually punch let alone be able to watch a lot to make a fair assessement. But I do remember seeing and fighting in the amateurs a lot of guys who really can punch harder than big names but they just didn't have the talent of the big names. I imagine the pros are similar. Mayweather said Agustus hit him the hardest and Hopkins said Echols hit him the hardest. Just having a hard punch won't take you to the promise land. So I wouldn't just rule this guy out as the hardest puncher. But I'd have to see it to believe it.
Re: Hardest punching heavyweight- Joey Abell
Where do you think Sonny Liston ranks? If you look at the power of the jab, cross and hook combined, for me it is tough to beat Liston.

Well I was going to mention Foreman but Liston is another good add....This guy is just trying to get some quick publicity for his fighter.....Just to show this guys thinking pattern he throws Tyson in as one of the top 3 hardest hitting hwts in history but fails to think about the fact Tyson was not a very hard hitter in one shot type status....Tyson was so devastating due to his speed and combinations....Why he mentioned Sullivan is beyond me because many of the fans today never even heard of him....
Best name on his resume is Al Cole the former CW champion who is 45b and has lost 10 of his last 15. I hate when they try to hype up guys like this just to waste peoples time...worse yet embarrass the sport of boxing by thrusting these guys into the spotlight much as possible then have them look like fools on TV as it reflects on the sport....
At least Chris Arreola for as out of shape he looks the guy can fight and hold his own against top level comp
Re: Hardest punching heavyweight- Joey Abell
I seen him fight once on Shobox against Teke Oruh - Boxer Coincidentally it was his only distance victory. He won almost every round despite the judges having it a majority decision. I remember thinking he has decent pop in his punches but not as hard as his record would indicate.
Elbaum talks out of his ass most of the time. He thinks Primo Carnera would be heavyweight champ today

Actually really funny, watched some youtube stuff and it seems like he loads up on everything. Hardly a Shavers, Tyson, Tua, Foreman, Liston, Frazier or even George Chuvalo...More along the lines of a lefty Vinny Maddalone, which would make for a nice fight ;)

Hmm....Now you mention it a bout with Maddalone would be pretty entertaining....Vinny is a low level gate keeper that always has action bouts win or lose
