Mayorga is going over to MMA?
Mayorga: "I Conquered Boxing, Now I Will Conquer MMA" - Boxing News
Man, I think Mayorga is a good candidate to go into MMA. He's tough at nails, what he does is gritty though. kinda hard to picture him having a ground game. What is it with UFC picking up boxings leftovers?
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
Yes and he's fighting in March I believe.
Too bad its against Din Thomas...so Mayorga is most likely gonna get tapped out.
He's my favorite fighter and I wished he would have stayed in BOXING.
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
He's doing himself a huge disservice by going against Din in his fight pro fight. If he was serious about an MMA career, he should have eased in like guys like Bobby Lashley have. Hes just going to be taken down, submitted, and that will be it.
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
"conquered boxing"
beating vernon forrest and then having your ass handed to you by every decent opponent you ever thought is hardly conquering anything is it.
Mayorga will get a schoolground beating by a mixed martial arts specialist and dana white will claim some kind of bogus moral victory over boxing!!
The exact same thing would happen to couture if he ever dared to step in a boxing ring!!
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
Yeah, cuz offering free shots and then getting cut to ribbons by guys wearing 10+ ounce gloves wasn't enough... Wouldn't put it past White as the MMA mouthpiece to approach Thomas with a little financial incentive to finish mayorga as quickly as possible...
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
Mayorga has been training for this since October I think, well thats when it was first mentioned, hopefully hes learnt enough to not lose early, he was also the one who wanted a class opponent!
It will be fun while it lasts, Din Thomas is always going on how he could outbox a boxer and with Ricardos goading, maybe he might try and trade;D

I dont think that will happen. This MMA fight has nothing to do with the UFC, he is fighting on a 'Shine' MMA card, a lesser organisation. I agree though that Din Thomas is a wrong choice of opponent. Din is very talented, well-rounded and a former UFC veteran. Once the fight hits the floor, that will be all she wrote.
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
Don't you think UFC will negotiate with fighters to force the fight standing at least for sometime at the beginning? If there is no KO at that initial minutes, then I guess it will soon finish on the ground. After all UFC fighters can take the chance of having sevearl loses and still be at the top, different from boxing where the 0 losses has a lot of weight. With this I am not saying that Mayorga will win, just that UFC can try to make this fight more entertaining and man, if a negotiation like this happen Mayorga has power.

He's not fighting in the UFC.
He's fighting for some small upstart company, Shine.
Idk if it will even be televised. Probably will be on PPV or some crap.
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
Shame it's Mayorga. He won't do boxing justice IMO. It needs to be someone with really good and fast footwork because yes if it goes to the floor the boxer loses but whilst it's stood up, with the handspeed and power boxers have in their arsenal, they are extremely dangerous to an MMA fighter. Don't forget the fight starts stood up.
Someone like a prime Roy Jones who could be 10 feet away, wait for his opponent to make a move, move in and bang with a freakish amount of force and be back 10 feet away in less than a second would have been a nightmare for an MMA fighter.

This is classed as match-fixing, and a HUGE no-no in MMA. This exact thing happened with the Elite XC MMA promotion and it turned out to be the end of them, and they had Showtime backing them, or at least they did until the allegations came out. Elite's ratings king Kimbo Slice, was due to fight Ken Shamock in their last show. Shamrock pulled out 30 minutes before the fight, so they got a fighter literally out of the audience, Seth Petruzelli. Seth appeared on the Ultimate Fighter and was a well rounded MMA fighter. Seth knocked Kimbo out in 14 seconds. After the event, Seth came out in the press and said that the bosses at Elite XC offered him more money if he kept the fight standing and didnt go to the ground, as Kimbo has no ground game.
After that Showtime pulled the plug and Elite went bust.

A lot of rumours of match fixing surrounded Kimbo. Apparently Ray Mercer is struggling financially and he was paid to throw his match with Kimbo too.
Saw Kimbo getting battered off James Thompson who is from Rochdale which is just down the road from me, when a freak ear injury won the fight for Kimbo. Butterbean smashed Thompson in about 1 minute when he fought him. Thats the level we're talking here!
The guy was a youtube street fighting phenomenom but he is no pro fighter thats for sure!!

I've seen the Mercer fight and I don't think he threw it. I think he just got choked out and didn't train for MMA worth a damn.
Thompson is a journeymen with a very weak chin. He did give Kimbo a hell of a fight though and nearly beat him before his cowleflower ear blew up with blood.
For what its worth Butterbean would most likely KO Kimbo in the cage as well.
Re: Mayorga is going over to MMA?
