If this is what it says then you have to respect Roach 100% and more if it was possible for sticking w his feelings....Especially since he is turning down a single payday because he believes that even 1 more fight is 1 more too many for Hatton.....You don't often see that
Re: Roach turns down Hatton...
Freddie knew the consequences of fighting one too many straight out of turning a lead ear to a wisened counsel... he is a living testament of its wicked backlash.
Instead of listening to Eddie Futch, his trainer during his day, Roach even felt resentment initially, towards his trainer's plea for him to hang it up when clearly, his best hand was to call it a day.
Today, Freddie, painfully recognizes its dangers, and more or less crusades against this from happening.
Ricky, consider yourself blessed, as there still are good people who still, gives a damn.
Re: Roach turns down Hatton...
fair play to roach, had he of took the money and trained ricky he would of gone back on every single thing he ever said about hatton
Rickys worst ever decision was letting floyd mayweather jr in his training camp. Stick to what you know best. Beard should of been the main man, if he`s good enough for guzman he should be good enough for hatton

yea i know, i'm just being a smartass lol even though i think it's bullshit the way that they try to put ALL the blame on Floyd Sr., some of DLH's biggest wins came with Floyd Sr. in his corner and Guzman had looked just fine before the Funeka fight

Oscar would have beaten Vargas, Gatti (rip) Mayorga and his struggle with Sturm with or without Floyd Sr in his corner; I think Sr is a highly overated Trainer. And Kudos to Freddie for turning down Hatton a fighter whose lifestyle is more important then taking boxing seriously. He should call it a career and and continue the one of barfly.

i'm pretty sure he would, but anyone who says that Mayweather Sr. didn't help with his defense is pretty blind
Re: Roach turns down Hatton...
I don't see the wonderful honest Freddie Roach that's so concerned for Ricky Hatton's welfare that everyone else does and here is why.
Freddie Roach refused chance to train 'washed up' Ricky Hatton - Telegraph
The quote that sticks out is "If he wanted to fight Amir Khan, that's one thing. But I couldn't train Ricky. I said I think he should retire. He's washed up."
Seems to me his concern is his own reputation rather than Ricky's welfare. He doesn't want to be associated with a losing fighter. He has no problem training somebody to beat the crap out of him & make money off it.
So please let's cut the 'Freddie cares' column because he's concerned for how it looks on him not that Ricky shouldn't be fighting any more.
Re: Roach turns down Hatton...
Ricky Hatton should have all ready retired !

I think his defense was more solid when he was with Alcazar because he had better movement. It seemed when he got with Floyd he seemed to be more grounded and took more flush shots. He used alot of shoulder roll when he fought Gatti but I didn't see alot of it in later fights. Sturm got through alot with just a jab and Forbes got through and fractured his cheek bone and Pacman tore his defense apart. I'm not trying to start another thread but I really did not see alot of improvment under Floyd Sr.
Re: Roach turns down Hatton...
"If he continues fighting, he's [Ricky] going to jeopardise his health. I would not want to be a part of that," said Roach, who has Parkinson's Syndrome himself.

Freddie Roach.
Re: Roach turns down Hatton...
Roach said he was uneasy about taking on the role.
"I've just asked one of my fighters Gerry Penalosa, to retire. You can't lie to your fighters.
-Freddie Roach.
