Does Paulie Mallignagi Tell Too Many Home Truths For His Own Good?
I still can not fathom why this guy is considered a "prick", "loudmouthed cunt", "dickhead" etc etc
Every time I listen to an interview from this guy I hear myself thinking "THANK YOU!!! I'm glad someone said it!"
3 examples spring to mind
His fight against Herman Ngoujou (Sp?) :- In his post-fight interview, he was asked whether he was hurt as he looked wobbly at one point. He attacked the question straight away.
I can't remember his exact words but he definitely said, "oh man, how did it look? Did it look bad?"
I thought "bravo", for tackling the issue and admitting you were hurt. They're the fighters you have to worry about because they're constantly improving the weaknesses they're aware of.
2nd Example
vs Juan Diaz - His post-fight tirade was not only true about the sport of boxing but he also made it clear that he had respect for Diaz - Good sportsmanship and charisma shown.
3rd Example and most recent
Amir Khan was on soccer AM a few days ago here in the U.K. They got Paulie on the phone and while he did the standard trash talk - He also gave Amir props for "going about his career in the right way and coming to the U.S early because most people who want to test their skills on the world stage want to come here. It takes some fighters from the U.K a long time to get over here, like Ricky Hatton took 40 fights to get over here" - Again, very true!!
4th bonus example
His rants on the Pacquiao/Mayweather fallout - He pretty much summed up what every non-Pac hugger was thinking. If you are clean, why not take the test? He also mentioned that the Floyd/Mosley fight was a great fight and the Pac/Clottey fight was a foregone conclusion and a bit of a smokescreen.
Again, VERY TRUE!
So why do people hate him? Does the truth hurt? Is it just the way he comes accross? His personality?
I personally think if he had any kind of power, he'd be an absolute superstar in the sport. He's charismatic, he's coherent and very, very honest.

I don't mind some of the stuff Paulie comes out with but then on other occasions, but the Hatton point is very unfair imo, firstly Khan has been a known person since the day he turned pro at 18 so it was always going to take him less time to get to the big fights in the States than your average fighter, if he used Calzaghe as the example yes but not Hatton, Hatton had 40 fights but he was only 27, and as soon as he broke onto the world scene or held a world title he went for the big names on the States exact same as Khan as done.

At times yes but he does indeed air a fair few very valid home truths and you always need guys like malignaggi that are going to ask questions.
A very intelligent little fighter that knows his limits and doesnt allow himself to fall out of the gameplan hence why i honestly think he`ll be too busy for khan come fight night

The problem with Paulie is that he's known more for his mouth than boxing ability in the ring, which I think in a way people are going WTF? Now everyone says Floyd is a loudmouth, but the thing is Floyd has great skills to back them up. Even the people out there that might not like Floyd's personality, they respect his great skills.
Mouth+skills=respect by most. This is a Floyd.

Malignaggi comes across as decent guy on the whole, but he has obviously never got over the Hatton fight. It was a proper drubbing and Malignaggi is too proud to just admit that Hatton was just too good. I like him though and hope he can continue to build on the post Hatton showings.
I saw on some video that even that Amir Khan prick has got onto the anti Hatton bandwagon by calling Hatton "one dimensional" at some press conference. God, I hate Amir Khan. The guy is so incredibly thick and clearly doesn't think before speaking. I truly hope he fails miserably in this tranatlantic crossover. Send him back to England where apparently everyone is into him! Surely they aren't....:-\

I think Paulie is a top man, a straight talker who really does not worry atall what people think of him and also only speaks the mind of many who won't. He has bundles of boxing ability, and, as someone previously mentioned in the thread, if he had power, he would certainly be a force to be reckoned with at 140 no doubt in my mind.

I know you want to defend Paulie because he is 1 of Hatton's biggest win I presume.
Actually Paulie got his ass kicked badly by Cotto, a weight drain Cotto with chin issues at 140 I might add. A 1 dimensional declining Hatton whom no one rates that highly outside of his country.
Paulie has always been a B- or C+ fighter. Never was elite or even good, but just decent. Slightly more skills than a Dmitry Salita but way better chin would sum it up.
Quick name me his biggest wins? If you have to say Juan Diaz and a shot Ndou, then I rest my case.

Because he talks so much shit about other fighters, when he has made himself look like a right ass in the past. What about his haircut in the ring ? or his awful performances against N'dou, Ngoudjo.
Even against Ricky Hatton as soon as he felt the power, he went into a defensive shell, constantly bending below the waist to avoid punishment.
He's only had one win worth mentioning against Juan Diaz, and Juan Diaz has seen better days and he's no Jr Welterweight either.
I admit Paulie Malignaggi did have a good performance vs Miguel Cotto, but that was way back in 2006. He's done nothing since other than the Juan Diaz win.
Im sorry but i just don't like the way he acts in the ring, nor do i like his constant rants about other fighters, when he himself hasn't achieved much. He comes across to me as a bit of a jealous ass.

Someone said people respect Floyd's skills, yeah you'd have to be blind not to but Paulie is way more intelligent and coherent than Floyd which is why I'm surprised people dislike him for the things he says

Khan comes accross as fake - One minute he'll trash talk somebody and the next he's on a big TV channel like ITV and he tries his hardest to be humble.
It's too obvious to me. He tried the whole "Well errr you know...hopefully the best man will win coz errr we're both warriors at the end of the day so errr...we'll see what happens on the night hopefully we just have a good fight" and you can just see him struggling to say nice things.
Paulie says what he wants and it always comes accross as genuine - I think that's the part I like about him. I don't have to think, "What is he REAAALY feeling/thinking?"

I don't see how anything he's said has hurt him, HBO's in love with him and always have been. He led an HBO card against Edner fucking Cherry for fuck's sake. And he's gotten opportunity after opportunity, considering the fact that its hard to consider him an exciting fighter he's done very well.
His pre-fight whining before the Diaz fight was absurd. Other than that I don't mind him, he has the awesome punch out commercial and mid fight haircut going for him.

Yes and give Amir Khan a chin and he becomes elite in my opinion also. Or give Zab Judah mental toughness he also becomes elite. I mean if we play the give him whatever he needs game to become elite then we can do that to a lot of boxers out there.
Like I've pointed out before, FLoyd has skills and accomplishments to back it up with that mouth. Paulie? Come on. When you talk and you can't really back it up, it becomes annoying, same thing with Amir Khan I might add.
