His career lasted from the 1960's to the 1980's. He was the third man in the ring for many classic bouts, the most famous being the first Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight on March 8, 1971. His refereeing career began professionally in 1954 and ended in 2001 at the age of 81. In 1995 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota New York State.vy during World War II and his commanding officer was the legendary heavyweight champion Gene Tunney.

Referee for over 120 World Title fights, the last one occurring September 29, 2001, when he was 81 years of age. BTW, I may not be your pal.
Re: R.I.P. Arthur Mercante Sr.
A referee of great stature indeed, nice career bud, enjoy the last sleep as you plainly deserve it.
Re: R.I.P. Arthur Mercante Sr.
To be able to do what you love into your 80s is a true blessing.
Re: R.I.P. Arthur Mercante Sr.
He was probably my favorite in studio guest on FNF ever, I know thats a wierd way of remembering him but I'm only 19 so that's what I remember. Great guy had the best seats in boxing his whole life, RIP.
Re: R.I.P. Arthur Mercante Sr.
The very first name I commited to memory in as far as "third man" in the ring goes. Have kept this cognizance for a very long time, this is a testament to the high standard that he maintained all these years on the quality of his craft in officiating.
R I P, Arthur Mercante Sr.
Re: R.I.P. Arthur Mercante Sr.
He was the 3rd man in the ring in my favorite revenge fight, which would be the RJJ-Griffin 2 fight.
