Funeka tests positive for diuretics
read this off of ESPN,
"South African lightweight Ali Funeka (30-3-3, 25 KOs), who dropped a split decision to Joan Guzman in a vacant lightweight title bout on HBO March 27 in Las Vegas, tested positive for banned substance following the bout, according to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Kizer said Funeka tested positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Diuretics can be used as masking agents for steroids and are also used to help weight loss. Guzman, of course, was nine pounds overweight for the bout, so only Funeka was eligible to win the belt. The commission will hand out its punishment to Funeka at Friday's commission meeting, but Kizer said he faces a fine of up 100 percent of his purse and a suspension of up to one year."
so guess Chavez Jr. isn't the only one using them

In what way was Funeka being dramatic?
Anyway, no excuses. You can't use illegal substances. He deserves what he gets.

he was clearly upset at the weigh in, and at first it was understandable from our point of view, but knowing that he was on something going into the fight and act such a way is pretty ridiculous, all i know is my sympathies for Funeka are long gone, that said Guzman is still a piece of shit

Nine pounds over is clearly insane though. A diuretic is going to offer no means of beating a guy who has purposely come in so heavy. But yeah, both guys suck. I just think Guzman sucks a lot more and really should be banned too.
Re: Funeka tests positive for diuretics
I am a Joan Guzman fan but this really disappoints me, because i've always respected Ali Funeka. But yet again boxing has been dealt another black eye.
Re: Funeka tests positive for diuretics
It is kind of funny that if he was as dramatic about someone missing weight and the discipline it would take to do it, that he himself had to cheat to make 135. They both should be ashamed end of. So that basically means even if Funeka won he'd have been stripped?
Re: Funeka tests positive for diuretics
If they would have just fought at Diamondweight, Guzman would have been fine and Funeka could have made weight clean.

See THIS is a situation where I can see a catchweight fight working.
If about a week before the fight one fighter doesn't think he will make weight then both camps should contact each other and sanction something and turn it into a catchweight fight.
But what must be agreed on is that the fighter that makes the call for the catchweight fight not fight at that weight class anymore. Fair for everyone? No one burns themself out on weigh in day and the guy that can't make weight has to move up after the fight
Re: Funeka tests positive for diuretics
Many, many, many fighters use diuretics to make weight.
Roberto Duran used to use then frequently in his day.
Ricardo Mayorga tested positive for them before as well.
IMO its not a huge deal.
Yes, it is unfair, but it is not as bad as loading your gloves or using steroids.
To be honest I think a lot more boxers use performance enhancing drugs or have, and just have not been caught due to taking masking agents and cycling on and off.

that's the thing, they're using diuretics as a masking agent

Exactly. Does anyone really believe boxers are taking a chance of getting banned and losing their purse because diuretics help cut weight or because diuretics help mask PEDs? Hmmm, which one is more beneficial and worth the risk.
Re: Funeka tests positive for diuretics
Damn so many drugs how can boxing authorities keep up. It just seems a lost cause, unless they start giving life time bans to deter the use of them.
