Nice find
Love reading those old school stories... 60 rounders an all that.
Brutal stuff ;D
Carnage weren't it !! ;D
I got a book years back that has loads of write ups of these fights, one of them lasted nearly THREE hours.
Think the fella was called Daniel Mendoza and he used to toughen up his knuckles by using a tree instead of a heavybag.
There faces must have been a proper mess after just 5 mins for fucksakes ;D
Three hours :o
agree with what smashup said, great storys
bare knuckle boxing isnt even half as dangerous as boxing with gloves. Pretty sure nobody really died back in the days of bare knuckle. It was only once the invention of putting on a glove to protect your hand that the sport created fatalitys
Andre watched this fight live .
Damage to their hands must have shortened their careers.
And their noses :-X
Shame none of these were able to be caught on film at that time.
I'm not sure if this was the case with every fight of the era but in the legendary Sullivan-Kilrain fight John L. took swigs off his whiskey bottle between rounds instead of water....and the fight went 75 out of the scheduled 80 rounds.
LEGEND!
