Williams / Cintron rules farce

For those who didn't see the fight tonight, here's my wrap-up of what happened. Rounds 1-3 Williams edges each one, both fighters wary of each other's power, pretty dreary fare really. Round 4. Starts cautious, but then both fighters begin to trade, Cintron buckles Williams with a fine right, but is getting caught frequently by flush Williams shots. Both fighters go into clinch, Williams falls backwards propelling Cintron out of the ring, onto a monitor and the ringside table then onto the floor.

Firstly, as was pointed out on the UK broadcast by Jim Watt, the ring was a disgrace. There was no tension in the ropes whatsoever, and as Williams fell into them first, there must have been an 80-100 cm gap in the ropes that Cintron went through. The ropes also weren't fastened together to prevent these larger spaces between ropes from occurring. If Cintron is seriously injured, I predict a sizable lawsuit against the organisers.

Secondly, at the end of the fight, the ref Lou Moret was firstly telling everyone that they were fighting under ABC rules therefore it was a no decision as four rounds hadn't been completed. After a few minutes of this, and discussing with TV people, Moret then states that they were actually fighting under Californian rules meaning the fourth round only had to START for it to be a legitimate fight, and then gave Williams a win by SD. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the ref go over the rules with the fighters in the dressing room beforehand. If he's giving out the wrong rules....then how are the fighters meant to know what else is different?

Yet another example of why Boxing needs a worldwide governing body with a uniform set of rules. Rant over.

It was ridiculous. How is 35 seconds of round 4 equal to a 3minute round . I hope they change this to a no contest.

This fight was just starting to warm up , after a very slow start. Cintron had just stung Williams , and lets face facts the ropes were to blame for Cintron falling out of the ring. Its a no contest for me , and rematch.

When I was writing this last night I was just thinking how ridiculous the setup of the ring was to have the ropes so floppy and unresistant... only reason I can think they've set it up this way is to try and keep the action in the middle of the ring by making it hard to lean on the ropes and cover up. Thinking back, in the early rounds of the Honorio-Mendez fight it did seem as though the top rope was riding up Mendez's back when he was pushed back on the ropes.

As for the ref not knowing what rules they're fighting under? I'm still flabberghasted. And for those having a go at Cintron for not getting up when he hadn't been examined for injuries falling onto a monitor....seriously, if there's a doctor standing next to you insisting you need to get any injury checked out, you listen.

Pffft... why would you trust a doctor when there's legions of keyboard boxing medics who could tell you off a quick glance and a replay on a fuzzy internet stream that you were fine. Get a grip Rhun. Leave it to the pros - the patrons of various boxing sites.

Have to say that the slackness of those ropes was absolutely shocking man. No way they should have been used so poorly put together, especially without the ties on. Unbelieveable. And to say Cintron wimped out is just crazy. I actually felt like Cintron had the power to take Williams in there and i'm sure he felt that too. And to see Cintron reaction when led into the ambulance, lying down with no idea the cameras had followed him, he punched the ambulance door. He certainly wasn't a happy man.

Kermit quit or the whole fight was set up for him to quit in that fashion.

Against any real challenger Kermit quits. It is truly that simple. This may have been a clever ploy to milk another payday out of Kermit (as a previous poster suggested).

I will admit that it is doubtful the whole thing is rigged. But it is not out of the question.

Kermit never will beat Paul Williams. Not after 3 1/6 rounds, not after 12 rounds, not on a crossword puzzle. Real champions are always champions. Kermit never was one of those.

what was frustrating was that Williams has just landed 3 great lefts on Cintron's chin and it looked like it was just getting going! Paul was just finding his range and tbh would have probably overwhelmed him later in the fight.

yeah that is nuts. It was a freak fall, but I still think he could have tried to continue harder.

....most of the views from this fight are based on what "probably, coulda, might've happened. Williams could have been warming up gotten closer and BAM get caught with a shot in the 10th for all we know. They should have judged what they saw, not what they think they we're going to see, or what they were starting to see. Very odd night to say the least. If cintron would have got up and went on then loss, half of the people would now say he should have never continued after such a big fall on top of a monitor. And you know sure as shit that's what kermit would have said

the only honorable thing to do is have a rematch. calling a fight after 3.3 rounds is inexcusable.

Agreed. Cintron really did rock Williams at the opening of the 4th round before the fight ended. I'd like to see them get it on again.
