England 1990 Team vs England 2010 Team
This was being discussed on the radio ths morning. Obviously in 1990 we used a Sweeper, but I have to say I like the look of the 1990 team better than today's team.
Here are the line ups. I have put in Red which player I would have from the two options
GK Shilton Green
DL Pearce Cole
DR Parker Johnson
DC Butcher Terry
DC Walker Rio
DC Wright King (DMC)
WIDE Waddle Lennon
MC Platt Lampard
MC Gascoigne Gerard
FC Lineker Rooney
FC Beardlsey Heskey
Some tough ones to chose. I can't actually split Pearce and A.Cole and it;s very hard to pick against Rooney, but I had to on the basis that Lineker is proven in world cups and scored 10 world cup final goals and being the only England player ever to get the Golden Boot at the World Cup. Gerard and Gascoigne is another very hard one to call, but I went fro Gascoigne on the basis of his ability to chnage a game with a moment of brilliance.

looking at this apart from Lineker I have to agree with you - Gary could score but Roo can score and create (and from outside the 6 yard box :))
Its a real shame the rooney owen partnership never got going with Owen's premature decline. The ultimate goal poacher alongside a workhorse and supplier could have paid dividends.
Some nervey moments ahead over next few weeks thats for sure.........
Re: England 1990 Team vs England 2010 Team
Possibly the weakest team we`ve sent over since the likes of not actually qualifying from the period 74-82
No stand out goalie all 3 prone to errors
defence that changes game by game
ageing midfield thats seen better days
lack of goals up front and nobody of any quality to partner rooney
Its all about how the team gels in south africa though. Italy hardly took a quality team over 4years back and they went on to win the thing. Nobody really gave brazil much chance in 2002 either

sad but true
Rooney has absoloutely nobody to play off, you also have to wonder how it would now look had shaun wright phillips not taken out dean ashton (who many believed was the next shearer) with a 2 footed challenge in training

Yeh, I really liked Dean Ashton - what a waste!
If I was Fabio, I would play a holding midfielder (Barry, if fit, King if he's not) Lampard and Gerard, J.Cole and James Milner (i.e no second striker) Gerard and J.Cole are more likely to provied chances for Rooney from 'the hole' than Heskey is imo. If we play Walcott, we may aswell get Usain Bolt, and Lennon still doesn't have enough end product for me. Great to bring on after an hour to terrorize tired defenders, but not a starter for mwe

The same, although he may take Huddlestone instead of Carrick. May depend on Barry's fitness test today

to be fair id say its a complete toss up between the 2. At the start of the year carrick was a nailed on to be in the 23 but his poor form combined with harveys excellent form at spurs makes it complete 50/50
at this stage though id just go with the experience of carrick, better the devil you know and all that ;D;D;D

at this stage though id just go with the experience of carrick, better the devil you know and all that ;D;D;D
I'd actually take your boy Scottie Parker, but the chance came a bit late for him
mate what is the point picking someone to join the squad and then not even bothering to use them
One of the few things i actually have to question capello on, fuking ridiculous idea whoever advised him to do so deserves to be shot
I dunno mate, there are a lot of people he needed to look at, he couldn't give enough game time to all of them. Maybe he wanted to see how they fitted in with the squad, maybe he wanted to see them in training. He probably almost knerw his 23 before hand, but if you if you can pick 30, why not pick 30 just in case and then narrow down
Re: England 1990 Team vs England 2010 Team
Riddle me this...
How does SWP get in ahead of Johnson when SWP can't get a game at City because of Johnson? ;D
Re: England 1990 Team vs England 2010 Team
The 1990's team is better and more balanced.
Suprised at Walcott not going but do not rate SRP or Lennon, they are all impact players. I bet Gerrard plays there with Cole on the left wing.
