Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
Green gives Briggs 'chance of a lifetime'
by Peter Kogoy
DANNY Green has granted Paul Briggs his wish -- a shot at a title -- three years after he was forced to give up boxing on medical advice.
Specialists had found an adrenal gland disorder.
"I'm giving Briggs the opportunity of lifetime. He's got nothing to lose," Green said.
At stake for Green is his IBO cruiserweight world boxing title next month, when he steps back into the ring against former sparring partner Briggs.
Green has had some bruising training sessions in the past with Briggs, who twice fought Poland's Tomasz Adamek for a light heavyweight world title.
"I guess I've sparred him (Briggs) in 30 or 40 of the hardest rounds I've ever had," Green said.
"They were almost blood wars. The thing about Briggs as a fighter is his incredible willpower.
"He has also got a cult following from his kickboxing days and what I'm offering him is a chance in a lifetime for him.
"If he comes out on the night in July and beats me, then the world is his oyster, but that ain't going to happen."
"Hurricane" Briggs, a former world champion kickboxer and DJ, said he had overcome the problems with his adrenal gland and nervous system, which forced him to quit and take up work as a TV commentator.
Briggs, who comes from a family of Kiwi fighters, had his last bout in February 2007, against South African Rupert van Aswegen.
"I'm in great shape," he said.
His trainer Billy Hussein said: "Briggs is not doing this for the money. He has passed his medical and now comes the hard part of working on a fight strategy.
"Both Briggs and Green are big, big punchers, so we're expecting it to be fireworks from the opening bell."
Green's trainer, Angelo Hyder, said his fighter's lack of long fights was not a concern.
The Green "Machine" last fought Manny Siaca in April, knocking out his opponent inside three rounds. Against Roy Jones Junior, the fight lasted a mere 122 seconds.
He took out Julio Cesar Dominguez in five rounds, while Anthony van Niekerk was pummelled into submission in two.
Green, who has a 29-win, three loss record, including 26 wins inside the distance, takes on Briggs (26-3) at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on July 21.

Well if Briggs has passed his medical, I give him a good shot at winning this. Of course he may have a ton of ring rust, but he is a durable rugged warrior and will push Green to the limit. Could be a very entertaining night.

Green ducked Tarver for Briggs? Good to see the Jones win hasn't gone to his head

Mate we dont get many big fights in Aus and to be honest I said yrs ago that I wanted to see this fight. So granted....Briggs hasnt fought in 3 yrs but I am attending this fight in hope that Briggs is still the animal he once was in the ring and hoping he puts Green to sleep. If this doesnt happen then oh well at least I went to a fight (which is fun no matter what) but if it does then I was there to see it live ;)

Honestly, I think it can be a very entertaining fight, plus I am not sure that Oz land has so many boxing cards that goes over there. If I would live in Oz, I would definitely go see it as well.

WAR GREEN VS. BRIGGS
Re: Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
If Briggs is in any form like when he fought Adamek, this could be a WAR.
I hope it gets televised over her in the U.S. though I know it won't.
Lets see if Briggs can do it.
Re: Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
At the least the first 6 rounds should be very entertaining.
My trainer told me of the fight some time ago, briggs has been in training for a while from what iv been told.
Im looking forward to it
Re: Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
crazy fight hope briggs wins
Re: Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
I think if Briggs comes in anything like he did with Adamek than Green could be in a lot of trouble...this is doubtful due to ring rust but we can only hope lol
Re: Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
Lets be fair its not much of a surprise green hasn't done much why should we be surprised by this he beat an old Roy he hasn't proved himself to be anything special.
Re: Greens next opponent hasn't fought in 3 years!
You know what? I think you're right, Matt. Green has just as much to prove at PBriggs. I am not really sure what RJJ though he was doing moving up in weight and fighting Green, but with the win, Green gets a liiiiitle bit of bargaining power... Not much
... but how much does PBriggs have with 3years out? I know this guy always comes in 12 round fighting shape. I'm pretty excited to see him back, honestly. We could see a USA vs NZ showdown! Hopkins would graciously fight either of these two guys. For the right amount of money.
