Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Quote:
By Lem Satterfield
A few weeks ago, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer had tried to create a rematch between Bernard Hopkins and the recently retired Joe Calzaghe of Wales. After a have few positive conversations, Calzaghe made a decision to stay retired. With a Calzaghe rematch out of the way, Schaefer is exploring the possibility of matching Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs) against undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 KOs).
If Schaefer is able to reach an agreement with Interbox, who promote Bute, he would like to stage the fight in the fall. Bothe fighters saw action in the month of April. Hopkins won a twelve round unanimous decision in a rematch with Roy Jones Jr. Bute stopped Edison Miranda in three rounds. The Hopkins-Bute fight would likley take place at a catch-weight between 168 and 175-pounds. In several past interviews, Hopkins said he was able to make 170-pounds for a fight with Bute.
"I actually talked with our friend at Interbox Promotions, Jean Bedard, who is the CEO of Interbox, which promotes Lucian Bute. We spoke about the possibility of putting together a fight with Bernard Hopkins. And they would be open to doing a fight between Bute and Hopkins," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
"And so we're currently discussing that. The fight would be sometime between September and November -- somewhere between that window. That's what we would like to do. And I'm waiting for Jean Bedard to get back to me."

Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Hopkins looked totally shot to me against Jones Jr. He needs to accept that he is boring and past it and that nobody has any real interest in seeing him fight on.
Bute probably outworks or even stops Hopkins at this stage.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bute has just begun to reach his prime....And he looks great, Hopkins is past it holding on to what once was...He is not a walkover in any way and knows how to survive but he has to call it a day...He has become painful to watch in the ring...
Bute takes a UD after some ugly moments caused by Hopkins if this goes off but I don't see it to be honest unless GBP offers some big big money...Butes people are looking for the winner of the SSix
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Schaefer said Hopkins was going to fight Calzaghe this fall so I take everything he says with a pinch of salt to be honest.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
I've always been a Hop fan but Bute is just too quick and skilled at this point in Hopkins' career for even HIS crafty techniques to work on. Hopkins has slowed and his output is far declining. He's become more of a target and gives up early rounds.
Hopkins' farewell should have been the Pavlik fight. He will never look that good again.
Bute wins rounds 1-6 and a few down the stretch for a UD. That's how I'd see it happening.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
I think its time for Hopkins to hang em up aswell, hes had his day, now he is simply just pushing it, bute is young, strong, and busy. Hopkins can do well sure, but hell simply get outworked. He avenged Jones (sorta) he needs to say bye. He is a legend he deserves his respect, but enough is enough.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Bute UD, afterwards Hopkins still refuses to retire, calls out Roy Jones for a trilogy fight.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Here is my prediction:
Hopkins will figure out quick he is no match for Bute and will hold and turn the fight into an ugly stinker (as usual)....Hopkins will claim he is getting hit by imaginerary low blows 4 times and the ref will tell him to stop it and that he better protect himself. In the 8th round Bute will throw a straight right to the jaw and hopkins will act like he got hit low and look to ref. Ref will ignore Popkins and Bute will catch him with a sweet uppercut that turns out the lights and hopefully we never have to see hopkins in the ring or otherwise again.........Butes KO of Hopkins will be widely recognized as KO of the year 2010.

That's exactly how I see it. Hopkins is just a horrible fighter to watch these days and he seems to have slipped badly over his last few fights, which isn't surprising given his age. Bute will get caught a couple times, but Hopkins won't be able to hurt him with anything about that his head and it will turn into an ugly, foul-filled (mostly from Hopkins), clinch-fest which Bute will win.
Hopkins needs to go away.

I don't know if we're consulting the same kind of tarots but I was envisioning something like that... perhaps even more theatrical moves from Grand Dad Bernie

Well it seems to be the continuous agreement....I mean it is impressive that Hopkins can get inj and still not be made to look a fool by anyone but his own antics but he is absolutly a zero when it comes to having any real effect on the title scene picture...
He is turning himself into something he need not be because he really is an ATG without question and unlike Holyfield etc he is not coming back for slaughter after slaughter in the skill department when he faces the younger guys but instead he has become an actor..
I guess when you are a partner in GBP it makes it easy to push yourself into high profile bouts...:-\

Only until people refuse to watch those fights, which I think is coming soon for Hopkins.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
This sounds just like the feedback on hopkins before the Pavlik fight after him losing to Joe! I think Bute should avoid this fight he doesn't need it.

I don't think Hopkins SHOULD fight again, he looked his age against Roy practically. Thing is people wont stop watching if he were to take actually take a fight like this, can you really tell me you wouldn't care to see it? I think the fact that he is seemingly in such decline and clinging on sort of makes it all the more worthy a matchup given how dangerous Bute could be... Fighting a guy like this is pretty much the only way Hopkins can still get the spotlight, and how shit he's been lately won't really matter if they do this fight in Montreal, it would be huge.
Re: Hopkins vs Bute in talks for the Fall, says Schaefer
Yea I would definitely pick Bute to win this but I would urge him really really strongly to NOT take this fight. It would only make him look bad and Hopkins would be in his kitchen all night where Bute isn't comfortable. Bute just wouldn't look good and no way he would KO Hopkins.
