A question about the eyes
Hey,
I've been reading about the dominant eye, and different techniques about speed in relation to the eyes. Now one of the things suggested by Scrap was to shadowbox with ur non-dominant eye closed to increase speed (in my case the left).
Now my question is, what if I cover my right eye (dominant) during my regular tasks at home? Will that help me become less dependent on it and improve my left or will it just cause a whole lot of unnecessary stress on my left eye?
I apologize if this has already been covered in the past.
Re: A question about the eyes
It will put stress, and interfere with everyday function. Its best in the area of speed to go blind. Your fastest response in the senses is feel and touch, eyes slow the procees down, and interferes with the touch and feel in movement as regards domminance in habits as doing, a motion on one side while stabalising with the other. Its something we are born with, but can be worked on to improve.
Re: A question about the eyes
ok fair enough, thats makes sense. Thanks Scarp.
I'm guessing once you build the ability to do a task blinded (in our case box) you will no longer be reliant on the sense of sight which is the one slowing you down even when ur eyes are open.
I guess I should try shadowboxing with my eyes closed and see how that goes.. I just dont want to be the new kid that looks like he thinks he's the shit, boxing with his eyes closed.
Now, I see how this will really help speed up ur offence.. Do you have any tricks up ur sleeve (that ur willing to share) to sharpen reflexes in defense? I know a lot of it is just being able to read ur opponent and anticipate the shots, but there's gotta be a way to improve reaction time when you see a punch coming towards you, no?
Re: A question about the eyes
There are Techniques to improve balance and perception, the main one is good posture. As ive said before Oral stability is a main player, what you are trying to avoid has already happened. Understanding what the movement before is takes time ;D.

Going on what you say: close range you can practice fighting without your sight interfering as much:
Practicing interruption of movement by dropping your gloves into the crook of the opponents elbows and then react off of their next move by feeling it directly or off your little push one way so that you know already mentally which way they'l go and flow around their obvious natural reaction to push against your push; (thats where you slip them and move. You can fight or flow around their arm movements also disrupt their balance as they move because you have control of their balance at one of the main balance points, the elbow.

That's an interesting way to look at it.. and it makes good sense.
man... I have a lot to learn
And Andre.. thanks, I'm going to give that a try while sparring
Re: A question about the eyes
Also scrap.. when you mention posture.. are u referring to an individuals posture in general.. or are you talking strictly about having good posture in boxing.
Either ways, what would constitute as good posture in boxing? Head aligned with coccyx?
btw.. forgive me for my ignorance
Re: A question about the eyes
im sorry, are you supposed to close both eyes? or just the non-dominant one? -- this is pretty wise stuff, thanks
Re: A question about the eyes
Shut both eyes, eliminate the sense.
Re: A question about the eyes
Scrap, when you suggest, shadow boxing with your eyes closed, do you suggest slowly focusing and keeping your mind on your technique and really just feeling out what your other senses are telling you.. and slowly speed yourself up as you feel comfortable up until your being able to shadowbox at 100% speed blinded?
btw.. i'm taking your advice, I'm not going to be doing these blinded exercises just yet.. I'm asking out of curiosity and for future reference.
Re: A question about the eyes
Thats it, do it somewhere thats safe, you know what I mean by that ;D
