Great Trainers that never faught??
Hey guys,
I was randomly wondering if there were trainers out there that dont have a substantial boxing career as fighters.. for example Emanuel Steward had a pretty extensive amateur career, Roach as well, plus pro.
But are there any successful boxing trainers that did not fight?
Cus D'amato?... Brother Naazim Richardson maybe?
I know having extensive fighting experience would be a great asset, but I always wondered if there were great trainers that simply studied the sport but never really competed.

In recent years youd have to say Calzaghes old man, for a few years he had a successfull stable of fighters, all limited but he managed to get them to work.

wouldn't call him great but he is a very good trainer and brought Miguel Cotto to the world staged, Evangelista Cotto

Thanks for the responses guys... I figured there must have been a bunch out there. Just couldnt think of any that for sure did not.

Just had a quick read and looks like youve answered a question that wasnt asked. You said you were debating Bruce Lees prowess as a martial artist, not as a martial arts instructer.
As a martial artist, Bruce Lee was top notch. As a fighter he was totally unproven as he never took part in any tournaments or competative bouts to judge him as a fighter on.
He could teach martial arts but I doubt he could train any top MMA fighters.

It goes into a bit more detail with regard to Lee being a great strategist - but also explains how men such Cus D, Ray Arcel, Gil Clancey as some of the greats who never fought yet were the top guys in the sport as well as details why having prior fight experience is not necessarily necessary in order for one to become a top trainer. As far as Lee is concerned, if you read further down in the comments you will see that Lee trained Norris, Mike Stone, and Joe Lewis - and during this time they never lost a tournament.
