Tyson: Haye has to fight Klitschko's not Harrison

TYSON: HAYE HAS TO FIGHT KLITSCHKOS

Thursday September 2,2010
By Niall Hickman

MIKE TYSON is convinced David Haye can be the “saviour” of boxing’s blue-riband division – but only if he agrees to fight the Klitschko brothers.

Former undisputed world champion Tyson believes Haye has the charisma and talent to become the best heavyweight around, but he still has to prove himself against Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko.

Haye made the first defence of his WBA title in stopping John Ruiz earlier this year, but has not agreed a date with the Ukrainian-born, Germany-based brothers.

Instead, he has been strongly linked with an all-British showdown against Audley Harrison on November 13. It is a clash which does not appeal to Tyson, who became the youngest heavyweight champion in 24 years ago. “I cannot see Haye versus Harrison being anything other than a warm-up fight and David does not need warm-ups at this stage of his career,” he said.

“He won the title fair and square in beating Nikolai Valuev and defended it well against Ruiz, so now it has to be time for the Klitschkos. They are the opponents he should be facing.

“I’m a big David Haye fan as he has the charisma and smarts to be the best heavyweight out there, but he is not going to prove that by beating Harrison.

“Haye needs to lighten up the heavyweight division and he can become its saviour by fighting and beating the best. That is the only way to do it in boxing.

“When I was coming through they put me in with all the top fighters when I was still a baby in boxing terms. That was maybe too early, but for Haye not to be fighting the best out there right now is too late. He has to do it. What’s the point in being in the sport if you don’t test yourself against your rivals?”

Tyson won the WBC title in November 1986 aged just 20 years and four months and unified the division within a year. He electrified boxing to become one of the most famous sportsmen in the world and now, following his retirement four years ago, he wants to see Haye in the ring with the Klitschkos.

“The heavyweight scene has been mediocre for some years now and it needs shaking up,” said Tyson. “Too many fighters are just satisfied with a good pay day instead of building themselves up and testing themselves.

“Boxing fans are fed up by it all and you can’t blame them. They want excitement and want fights, proper fights.”

Haye is set to announce his clash with Harrison next week, having failed to reach a contractual agreement with either Klitschko.

“That’s crazy,” said Tyson. “Haye is a very good fighter, but we won’t know how good until he takes on the best heavyweights. Harrison does not come into that category.”

...Tyson would still whip his ass. Mike was never the toughest fighter mentally but he sure as hell was (and to a certain extent still is) intimidating and I honestly think Chicken Little is a psychologically weak fighter, even when he called out Wlad face to face you can kind of see that he doesn't even believe the shit he's talking and he's halfway scared of Wlad saying "Sure let's go...right here right now"....can you imagine what would have happened had Wlad said that? Chicken Little would have just balled up into a fetal position and shat himself

Wlad would never react in such an instinctive manner. You can't insert a rematch clause into an actual fight.

Haha you Brits....still lovingly devoted to Chicken Little....what can I tell you? I hope your next heavyweight has some balls. America may be turning out some piss poor heavyweights right now but at least they have the stones to step in the ring to win a title vs anyone....Eddie Chambers is a damn sight smaller than Chicken Little and he tried his damnedest to win a belt....but I guess that kind of fighting spirit is not to be found amongst the starry eyed wannabe celebutard WBA title holder Chicken Little.
Wlad didn't act in such a manner because he probably thought Chicken Little was some tin foil hat wearing szchizophrenic off his meds.

The entire Eddie Chambers fan club share the same taxi to his fights. He had no other options to make good money.
