Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
Eubank won the first fight impressively. I had Eubank slightly ahead at the time of the stoppage. The stoppage may have been slightly premature, but I think there was only one outcome and that point. I think Benn improved a lot after that fight and learnt to actual box a bit, when he was with Jimmy Tibbs.
I had Benn clearly winning the rematch, but Eubank was already badly affected by the Watson fight at that point
Best wins
Benn
Barkley
McClellan
Simms
DeWitt
Wharton
Eubank (although score as Draw)
Eubank
Watson
Benn
Roccigiani
Wharton
Malinga
Thornton
So who was best? Who ges down as better in history? And would either have eaten RJJ, Nunn, Toney or McCallum?
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
Eubanks was the better middleweight and Benn the better super middle.
Eubanks may come out down as better in history as he has the win and draw, although Benn fought topish Americans.
Neither would have eaten RJJ, Nunn, Toney or McCallum.
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
i'd say Eubank, i mean an old pretty shot Eubank took Calzaghe to the limit, i'd say both had a great shot against Nunn and McCallum, but Toney would win a competitive fight and Jones would have schooled both
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
I think Eubank fought to the level of his opposition, for the most part, and Benn couldn't be written off against anyone.
Back in the day, I always had Toney, Roy, Nunn etc beating them easily but now I think I underestimated them, either guy wouldn't be a walkover for anyone.
Imagine we had the internet back then with Benn vs Toney or whatever, would have been mental on here ;D
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
A massive Benn fan I think Eubank was the better at the time of their first meeting but Benn by the second. Though head to head i always feared for that one moment when Benn would get reckless and tagged by Eubank.
Think Benn would have fared better against the Jones and Toneys at the time and had the bottle to take on the main men - I don't reckon Eubank would have gone in against Mcclellan. Always remember him saying in an interview re a fight against Jones "if I can't see a way of winning the fight I won't take it"
I knew Benn would lose the first fight - was too confident I thought and at the end of the second I knew Eubank HADN'T WON, I wasn't surprised by the draw I guess.
I think over their careers Benn's wins v Mcclellan, and KO victories over Dewitt and Barkley in USA, slightly edge Eubank's achievements. Eubank did him the first time but the second they were on equal terms.
Could never understand why there was no third fight ?????? (no I don't count Gladiators).

I was thinking about this the other day. people would still pay to see these Two fight. Get them on 2 or 3 shows with easy fights o look good. A bit of arguing. Eubank there with the monical, top hat and cane and Benn smashing people with glass ash trays;D
Seriously though, why hasnt any promoter tried luring these Two. Be a money maker for sure. Although both old, theyre both still the same level. The winner gets to fight Hopkins;D
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
I'd have to go with Eubank but it's close.
I was going through some of my old boxing magazines the other day and came across a KO Magazine from 2006 that rated the top 20 British fighters of all time. They had Eubank one spot ahead of Benn.
Here's what the first paragraph said on Eubank

For those interested here's where Gavin Evans rated the British Greats
1. Lennox Lewis
2. Jimmy Wilde
3. Jim Driscoll
4. Freddy Welsh
5. Ted "Kid" Lewis
6. Ken Buchanan
7. Randolph Turpin
8. Benny Lynch
9. Owen Moran
10. John Conteh
11. Naseem Hamed
12. John H. Stracey
13. Peter Kane
14. Herol Graham
15. Chris Eubank
16. Nigel Benn
17. Howard Winstone
18. Alan Minter
19. Jim Watt
20. Freddie Mills
The writer made restrictions on Bareknuckle fighters, no Irishmen(north and south) and no foreign born Brits(Hope, Honeyghan) and no one currently active(Calzaghe, Hatton, Nelson etc) in 2006.
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
I dont see Eubank beating G-MAN , for me Eubank was just a bad style for Benn , with his rock chin , Benn was the better fighter for me.

Yeah but Eubank may never have gone down from McClellans shots and the fight would probably have ended earlier given that Eubank was always very big and strong for the weight and Benn was small and Gerald was also moving up. Benn never had the greatest chin, it was Geralds power that was beating Benn, not his skills. As soon as Benn would revover from a shot he was outboxing Gerald again. I think Eubank would have walked it.
I mean, for me, I think Gerald may very well have been just a little over rated. What fighter did he beat to prove how good he was? Jackson? He was on his way out and Gerald was behind on points at the stoppage.
Re: Benn or Eubank - Who was better?
I can't pick one, it's like being asked if Morales was better than Barrera - who I just can't seperate, I see them as 100% equal when all is considered, much like Benn or Eubank.
