Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
Maybe not so much as a PPV attraction (but he is getting closer) but I mean more mainstream? I live in Western Canada, not a real hot bed for boxing (other than eastern Quebec) and I see links to Pacman articles on non mainstream news websites (msn, yahoo etc) and other sites that never give two spits about boxing. My youngest daughter, who does goes to school with a small minority of Filipinos classmates knows who he is and I've never said anything to her about boxing.
What do you think?
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
:rofmaoal: The thought is hilarious. Oscar would have all kinds of females literally throwing there panties at him. From all ages.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
popularity wise, pacquiao wouldn't be able to sniff oscar's jockstrap and that's a fact. oh sure, pacquiao has oscar beat in the philippines because there aren't many sports stars there, but worldwide, oscar was ten times more popular than pacquiao.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
Probably Oscar but I don't think it's that far a gulf in popularity if it's measured worldwide.
In the west Oscar of course is more popular because he's a western fighter, in the East Pac takes it and I don't think that's up for debate and no that's not just the Phillipines where he's popular. I vacationed in China and Japan last year around this time, after the Cotto fight and he was quite known there when I chatted up some locals and it went into the topic of sports. I seriously doubt Oscar would be more popular than Pacquiao in the East.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
really, the only places it matters where a fighter is popular is in the western world. i'd say the united states, the UK, germany, france, italy etc...

Well you did say Pacquiao couldn't sniff Oscar's jock worldwide and that was a supposed "fact" and so I added the East, and it is considered to be worldwide.;)

that idiot does two things, backpeddle or contradicts himself.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
Pac made Oscar more popular after he beat the shit out of him.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
PSL,
sorry mate, it is what it is. pacquiao can never be as popular as oscar and you know it. at least not where it counts, in the U.S., UK, and europe in general. The chinese aren't much into boxing. in fact, the only asian country that really counts is japan because they're heavily into boxing and they've been the top dogs in asia since forever.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
PSL,
damn, you sound mad cause pacquiao will never be as popular as your God. sorry :)

I would say Manny already is more popular than Oscar worldwide.
I guarantee he will go down in history as a far more important fighter than Oscar.
He will be remembered like we remember Henry Armstrong, Ray Robinson and Ali.

:vd: Oh boy
Do you even know how many Japanese fighters fought outside of Japan this year? They only recognize WBA and WBC as legitimate international championship belt. Yeah, that's #1 boxing country in asia.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
PSL,
lookie here, the japanese have put more money into boxing than all the asian countries put together. they've produced more champions than any other asian country, fact. and isn't it shocking that even though japan doesn't recognize the IBF and WBO titles, they've still produced more countries in asia. how's that for domination! japan currently has better fighters overall than the philippines, thailand and south korea.
Re: Is Pacman More Popular than de la Hoya Was?
Sorry but no...
You guys realize that Oscar attended the Grammys the Oscars among other prestigious events?
Pac is the most popular boxer since ODLH and he is very well on his way to being up there.
If what we are talking about is popularity alone it's ODLH.
ODLH broke barriers in a lot of countries where boxing wasn't even taken into consideration.

Mick the Grammy's are American though, of course an American boxer will be more popular in America! Manny's global fanbase is rapdily growing however.
I'm would say it's a fair bet that Manny is more popular than Oscar across Asia and seeing as that continent holds well over half the entire world's population I reckon he wins.
What other boxer in the world could fight in a country not his own, against a fighter also not from that country and put on the biggest PPV fight of the year there?
Pac is massive. He may not go to the Grammy's but he does hang out with his country's president!
