help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
Hopefully Scrap will chime in on this one.
I have a big problem reaching when throwing the right hand (or rear hand, im orthodox). My head/weight always seems to push forward. And of course this causes you to be off balance and any additional punches, movement or defence is difficult. I know part of my problem is understanding range a little bit better. To fix this I try to hit the bag focusing on keeping my head back and starting the movement by pulling the left shoulder back.
Is there any drills/techiniques to help this?
Scrap gave some great tips about how to keep the head back while jabbing and it REALLY helped. I really started to understand 'fighting off the back foot' and how effective it can be.
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
Soooooooooooo you are having problems with your form in general?
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
Pull the front shoulder back, also lift the front heel slightly of the floor 1/4inch. It will stop it becoming a brake for your right shoulder as regards movement.
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
What i did to help with my form is to work on body shots on the heavy bag... use big scoops. believe it or not this will help your body(legs and sholders and head) to get the idea of how to move when throwing the straight right and or jab.
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
Thanks Scrap, I'll try to use the front heel as a brake like you mentioned.
Killer: What do you mean by 'Big Scoops'?
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
I said dont use the heel as a brake ;D
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
Oh... I think I got ya now. When the front leg is stiff, its like a brake not causing the body to rotate thus the weight goes forward with the momentum? Is that getting warm??
Ah, I see what you mean Scrap. Thanks!
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
i throw a right(or try to) by not throwing it across my body, but over my hip this seems to stop that tendency to lean into it an un- balance.
Re: help keeping head/weight back while throwing the right hand
your thumb should be facing up and your knuckles should be down... i know this is not what you were asking for but this really helped me with my stance and my posture the whole lot of it.
Stand in your fighting stance, get close to the bag and "scoop" your fists into the bag in a slow exagerated motion( moving your hips and feet).
do you kinda get it now? i hope this is better explained.
good luck
