how long does it take shadow boxing with weights to see some results in your speed

im 14 years old and ive been trying to improve speed in my punches i was just wondering how long does it take of shadow boxing with weights to see some improvement in your punching speed

imediately,forever,never...all depends what theory you belive..want faster train fast, no brainer hunh? i know, but try it. Scrap had a elastic workout try that, work on being relaxed, bring hand back twice as fast as you threw it, think like a wet towel cracking someone...whip-snap...then you will see results sooner than later...

MAte, dont ever rely on one thing.

If you do, you will eventually hit the wall and do yourself a repetitive strain injury that will stop your overall growth in your sport.

Have it within a routine by all means; but take it easy on yourself so that it doesnt form a block to you from expanding your skills and reactions in other areas.


Balance is everything. In the ring and in control of what you do to get in the ring. Balanced diet , balanced work rates, balanced everything.

I believe I read in one of Scrap's posts once that shadow boxing with weights can be bad for your joints - the elastic band posts are better and safer for speed work.

I think one thread was called "so you want fast hands".

I have seen a lot of guys develop elbow problems, wrist problems, muscle strains, etc. from picking up a set of dumb bells, or weights and working on developing fast punch reflex. They were not using excessive heavy weights either...ususally 3 to 5 lbs. Frankly, I can not say if it works or not. Have you tried 'blitzing' on a heavy bag for long periods to build up speed and stamina?

It took me a month to see a marginal difference. However, the greatest speed increase came from learning to fully relax before a punch. Think of it this way, if your already 30% contracted (made up number btw) because your tight then you can only use 70% of your strength/speed to move your arm...so your moving at 70% speed. Your probably already quick but just haven't tapped into that other 30%.

I've got to agree with the other posters here. Shadow boxing with weights won't necessarliy help your speed (though it will help you keep a solid technique when you're tired ..... assuming that you punching technique is right? Be careful, because repetitive technique work when your technique is poor will only make you worse.

I would definitely go for the elastic band solution, or even shadow boxing in a swimming pool if you can.

You dont want to overdo weight work at 14 because you are srtill growing and it might lead to joint damage in later life.

First thing ....... get a proper and good trainer!!!
