I guess I am the closest to it all, but usually the winds are going in the opposite direction. I'm not too keen on this whole radiation business, the consequences of it can be quite sickening. I actually think nuclear power is a very effective means of producing power, but events like this will happen. Maybe it's best if countries on or around extremely volatile tectonic plates don't rely on nuclear energy. There are other ways of producing energy and moreso if you are surrounded by oceans and open skies.
The question is,if the cheaper energy that comes from nuclear plants is worth the risk of spreading radiation over the whole globe in the case of an accident or mistake...and mistakes will happen for there will never be 100% security...In Germany,after the terrible events in Japan,is a big debate going on about pulling the plug from nuclear energy...In 2020 Germany could produce all the energy that is now produced by nuclear plants through renewable energy sources like solar energy and wind energy,but that will cost lot of money...Personally I think that it will be worth it,but I'm pretty sure politicians and lobbyists will fuck that up...Quote:

What I don't get is why they don't build the plants underground. It's just earth moving! So it won't really add much to the cost of burying the plant because they are encased in cement anyway. It just seems to me that it would be so much easier to build-in fail safes.

I think the type is the smaller versions rather than the land based ones. i.e. limited to a few hundred MW rather than 1000's, but chained. I agree about the clean energies being the most preferential means of producing power. There is no good reason why we haven't been investing more heavily. Well, there are reasons, but I wouldn't call them good. It's time for an entire paradigm shift. It would be better for everyone and much fairer on our planet. If that means large oil companies die then good and shame on any governments that invested pension funds in such corporations.
