Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
I am sure we are going to have that horrid, old Arum say "Well this fight did 200 billion PPV's and we are all very happy". He will then walk away whilst his trousers fall down from the weight of all the pieces of gold in his pocket.
Having said that though, we were all critical of this fight being made. Sure, most of us wanted Mosley to put Manny through his paces, but ultimately the fight was a massive stinkfest. There was little demand after Mosley's recent run of form, it was cynical matchmaking at its best.
So financially speaking it was probably a success, but in terms of Manny's rep and boxing enjoyment it was pile of crap.
What do you guys think, success or a manipulative bore?

Come on Miles tell us how you really feel ! haha
Simply put, the fight sucked. It sucked just about as much as the Clottey fight, worse I think, since I had higher offensive hopes for Mosley than I did from Clottey.
Mosley basically got knocked down and hurt, got scared, and went into survival mode.
Pacquaio looked a little underwhelming tonight too. Not quite up to his usual tremendous self.
Abysmal fight really...
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
It was a boring success, but at least the paying fans got to see Arce Vs Vasquez, which was pretty entertaining for midget boxing. :p The crowd looked huge.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
PAC dropping Shane and hurting him more than PBF is a success for me.
Anyways any PAC fight that PAC wins is a success for me;D

For me his fights are typically a success (even if the result has upset me), but it needs Pac to show something great and/or his opponents to show something. At least against Clottey we got to see his combination punching, this was really much more akin to Barrera/Pac 2 which was his last truly stinky fight. And at least Clottey was coming in off a fairly decent showing against Cotto.
This was far more opportunistic and the fight itself quite abysmal.

[scratching head]
I'm not sure how this gets laid at Manny's feet at all. Floyd won't fight him, Shane was, ahem, a little shy, what's he to do?
I mean who else should he have fought? What could he really have done given the way Shane was trying to go the distance?
Now was it a great night for the sport? Hell the Vasquez-Arce fight was an excellent fight and the Pavlik fight was two competent if unexciting guys. So it was a decent card anyway I thought.
Certainly not a Don King card from the early 1990's, but waddya gonna do?

The only way for it to be a success was for the fight to be an entertaining one. Either Manny wins convincingly or else Mosley puts up a solid showing to counter it, either way it needs to be a fight where two guys are looking to try to win. On that count this was a big fail. I think Clottey might have hurt Manny more than Shane did tonight. :-\
It was just a very poor fight and when you put it into the context of the fight before....well it just looks even worse. Vasquez/Arce was awesome. The easy winner of the evening.

LOL. OUCH on the bold!
I find even the Manny we saw tonight entertaining. He wasn't anywhere close to the same vicinty as his best, but his passion was all there. My view is in part motivated by fear. This sport is the merest shell of the one I grew up with in terms of available talent. In 2-3 years who is there really? Amir Kahn? Andre Ward? Jose Benavidez? I'm afraid I am holding on to the last vestage...God do I hope I'm wrong.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
Seriously, I think they could of taken mosley out of the fight in the 6th round, ran into the back and found Arce and he would of come out and made a better fight against pac.
It sucked in other words. But we all knew it would, it was just that last bit of hope that mosley had something left. Its why people keep paying to watch roy jones...just hoping to see 1 ounce of what he used to be.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
All in all I think the thread is a no brainer. I guess I was just disheartened to see Mosley so timid and gunshy, but I guess we already knew that he had become like this after the last two fights. The Margarito showing really was the last hurrah. This fight was never intended to be anything more than what it was. Both fighters used their names and got a massive payday.
I don't begrudge Mosley a final payday, but just wish that he was able to go out on his shield a little more. In 12 rounds he barely opened up at all. I have never seen Mosley on his bicycle like that, round after round. I guess it shows how far he has slipped. He still has a good brain and was doing the right things to nullify Pac, but you expect that of an experienced fighter.
A Mosley at 32 against a Manny of 32 is a much better fight. As it stands Mosley at 39 against a Pac of 32 was never likely to be a success. Only the Arum and the fighters can be truly content with what we saw.

Team Pac cant be wise after the event. They gave this opportunity to Shane knowing full well the old man couldnt fight anymore. He couldnt even beat a TV reality star in his last fight. They expect him to walk straight onto Mannys punches just to make the Flip look good? Nope Shane just came to pick up his paycheque and gave a massive farewell "up yours" to the gyus who gave him this opportunity that he didnt deserve.
Shane has 2 long decades of wars behind him and wasnt going to add further miles to his clock just to make it an exciting fight. The crowd were booing and even left the arena during the fight. The whole point of teh fight for Pac was to do summat Floyd couldnt do which was stop Shane. Pac didnt do that and even had to take a count himself so in that respect it was mission accomplished for Shane. His tactics didnt suggest he ever wanted to do anymore than that and it appeared he could make Pac miss effortlessly.
Floyd must be licking his lips at the prospect but must be hoping Marquez doesnt beat him to it.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
It will certainly alter a lot of peoples thoughts on Floyd/Manny. My mind is definitely flip flopping. Pac didn't look particularly good against a man who fought pretty scared from the 3rd onwards. Now if Manny can't go after an old Mosley who is not known for fighting so cautiously, couldn't nail a Cotto who decided to stick and move, then how is he going to do it against Floyd? Floyd is the master of this kind of thing.
Pac/Cotto had me thinking he had all the tools, but what I have seen since has calmed me down somewhat. If there is anything to make Floyd sign the fight then it is this one. And I don't believe for a minute that Pac looked bad just to lure Floyd in and dazzle him when they meet. Manny might be losing a step himself.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
That had to be one the the greatest examples of Gun Shy I've ever seen. Dreadful. Was really willing Manny to smoke him in the end. Movement takes away Manny's effectiveness almost altogether though and he just couldn't get off well enough.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
This fight was a lot like the 2nd Barrera fight in that the guy infront of him was making an art form out of not engaging. I am starting t ponder the thought of a third Marquez fight, just so I can see that beautiful left-uppercut come into play. No one else uses it ???
Also, I'm more convinced now that Floyd would beat Manny if they fought.
Re: Was Paquiao/Mosley a success?
Not the only flogging Mosley took today, hes also taking one twitter apparently. Everyone disappointed in his performance and saying he robbed them of their money...which I dont really disagree with. All we asked was that he try, he didnt even look like he wanted to win.
