Four Seconds of Arguello

Want to see how a GREAT stalk and destroy offensive fighter gets it done? Here is Alexis Arguello one punching Kevin Rooney. Let's look at what goes into the one punch. Be prepared to start, stop and rewind the video

.01-Arguello pivots off the ropes and presents a new angle to Rooney.

.03-Rooney jabs which Arguello slips to the left and Rooney takes a jab step to his left to change the angle

.03-immediately after the slip Arguello resets distance by taking a jab step with his left foot. He has responded to, and negated, Rooney's footwork.

.03 -As Arguello's foot lands Rooney throws a second jab which Arguello avoids by bobbing right simultaneously rotating his shoulders to the rear and shifting his weight to his back foot in anticipation of a counter. Rooney remains stationary.

Freeze the video here and examine Alexis' position. Weight on back foot, in slight crouch preparing to spring, right hand preparing to parry another Rooney jab if it comes, chin tucked under left shoulder, eyes on Rooney.

.04-A split second later Arguello pushes of his back foot driving his body erect, takes a tiny step with his left foot optimizing distance, and with his right hand high snaps off a jab that Rooney catches. Just as his left arm reaches full extension Arguello finishes driving off his right foot and his hips rotate violently followed by his torso and then his shoulders and BANG! A laser straight right hand travels about eighteen inches.

In four seconds Arguello has pivoted, stepped twice, slipped one way, bobbed the other, coiled his body, shifted his weight twice and then ended the fight.

Yup. But that right hand didn't exist in a vaccum. It was perfectly set up.

I used to be a big fan of Alexis Arguello, I hated it when he lost to Aaron Pryor, who I never cared much for. (or Panama Lewis who was a fucking con-man/crook)

Alexis Arguello could have also shared baseball great Ted Williams' alias, "The Splendid Splinter", he was tall for a light-weight and slender but he had a lot of pure muscle packed on that frame. He was such a tremendously disciplined fighter, with great technique, you see it even in his losses to Pryor.
