Did Dempsey Have LOADED GLOVES vs Willard?
Witnesses saw Dempsey place the railroad tie on the canvas and his promoter placed a straw hat over it and whisked it away. Willard swore til the day he died the power of Dempsey's punches were, well, unfuckingbelievable.
There are three possibilities that have been bandied about concerning this bout:
- Dempsey’s hand wraps were treated with plaster of paris.
- Dempsey held a railroad spike/iron bolt in his glove.
- Dempsey's gloves were not loaded.
The films clearly show Dempsey entering into the ring without gloves. This brings us to the first possibility. Were Dempsey’s hand wraps loaded with plaster of paris?
Jack Kearns, Dempsey’s manager, came out with his “confession” in the January 13, 1964 Sports Illustrated, in an article titled, “He didn’t know the gloves were loaded.” The SI story noted that Kearns was a “wily trickster and a ruthless opponent when money was involved.”

Re: Did Dempsey Have LOADED GLOVES vs Willard?
In The 12 Greatest Rounds of Boxing pages 17-18, “The Fight Doctor”, Ferdie Pacheco, writes, “The damage was indeed severe. In the first round Willard’s zygomatic arch (cheekbone) was shattered in 12 places. In the same round the champion sustained a broken nose, a jaw that was broken in 13 places, and 8 avulsed teeth. In addition to facial fractures he suffered 2 fractured ribs.” Likewise Dan Daniel wrote, Aug 1979 Ring Magazine, "Blood was flowing from Willard's mouth. Two front teeth had found their way to the canvas. His right eye had begun to close and the right side of his face was swelling abnormally. He looked as if he had been struck with a blackjack.

I posted this in a thread about Dempsey a while back. It's a good article on the wraps controversy surrounding the fight. It's very unlikely it was plaster of paris used and it seems like Willard's injuries were exaggerated
Were Dempsey's Gloves Loaded? You Decide!

That is actually a very inetersting read with some very notable sources.
Personally I believe Dempseys gloves were loaded - not illegally but with the intent to do damage and win the title.

Since there's really no proof that Dempsey's gloves were loaded, I choose to believe that he was just a devastating puncher. As for Jack "Doc" Kearns, I wouldn't believe a word that came outta his mouth.
Willard was a lumbering oaf that was easy for Jack to hit with huge hayemakers, end of story.
Re: Did Dempsey Have LOADED GLOVES vs Willard?
The result stands , so we can only presume that it is just talk that his gloves were loaded.
but if you have nothing else but pointless things to say please elaborate.
